There was a point defending the belt was a honor and everybody wanted the best title streak , now title shots are worth shit. Aldo, Anderson , gsp all held titles for a long time meanwhile these new champions we have barely defend or wants some kind of super fight . Sherdog needs to stop bringing up title shot talk and deal with the fact it’s nothing but a key to a bigger bank that’s all . Legacies are dead

The UFC became a trash circus since the GSP times.
And Chael Sonnen is a telling symptom of the trash era, with his shilling for Conor (who is like 2-4 or whatever), Chandler (who has one punch in the UFC) and Nate Diaz (who should not even be ranked) as contenders, while at the same time criticising Oliveira of all people.

It's all about PPV numbers and drama. The meritocratic aspect (legit rankings in a legit sport competition) is almost entirely gone.

GSP retired 21 February 2019 according to google.

Shevchenko, Nunes, Khabib were all champs then.

Usman, Stipe's 2nd reign started and Israel won the belt, all just 6 months after GSP retired.

All are still current champs.

So what changed from Feb 22nd onwards?

That's basically the main legacy of Conor McGregor, making titles worthless. Sherdog's nothing to do with it though. The UFC and promotions are to blame for this, whenever they put fame and instant money grabs over merit and long term prestige of their titles.

Life is meaningless.

Both yes and no. Yes there was a reason that GSP was a pursued fight, he was the cash cow at the time. The truth is titles never mattered, MMA fighters are prize fighters. They want the fight that offers the most money and it used to be the UFC champion got payed the most. Not to mention fighters were able to get sponsored so being champion payed a lot more outside of the cage. Things changed with the Reebok deal and Conor McGregor. The titles fights are no longer seen as the big money fights. & when it comes to sponsors, the UFC has the final say on which companies can endorse a fighter outside of the cage.

Cos he got battered by Hendricks but ‘won’, thus corrupt decisions have made belts worthless.

cos I can’t mock you for that.

The double champ gimmick is depressing.

Cejudo? Wins a very controversial decision vs DJ to get the Flyweight belt, fights emaciated dying Dillashaw at 125 for one defense then moves up to 135lbs...Fights Moraes, loses first round theb catches Moraes, has one more fight vs Cruz who hasnt fought in years and has been riddled with injuries, in the most stacked division Cejudo fights a retiree commentator to defend his belt once then wins and retires? Then says he wants to come back and challenge Volkanovski? Its a joke right? What morons enjoy this shit.

Conor begs for rematches when he loses to Diaz and Poirier but never gave Holloway or Aldo ones before leaving 145lbs with the belt having never defended it. Gets a free title shot after 2 embarrassing performances vs LW journeyman Diaz then gets handed a 155lb title fight and wins it...claims hes double champ then leaves the division to box mayweather relinquishing both belts, comes back and is gifted a shot vs Khabib and loses.

GSP goes up to face Bisping, legitimately not a top 5 MW despite having the belt and GSP wins then vacates rather than fighting a legitimate threat like Whittaker or Romero (oh his tummy hurt)

Izzy is about to muck up MW whether he wins or loses vs Yan and decided to move up to be "double champ" after what, 2 title defenses? One he arguably lost and the other he beat a pro fighter with 13 fights that choked and only a single top 10 win.

Seriously some of the dumbest shit ever. At least Jones relinquished his belt before moving up.

I don't think titles have reached the stage of meaningless but rankings are bs a lot of the time

Maybe not completely meaningless but certainly have less meaning than they used to be. Just these days we have:

Poirier (supposedly) passing on a TS to take a third fight with McGregor
Next title fight at LHW is going to be between a champion without a single defense, and a challenger without a single fight in that division
Similar thing with HW - Jones barely gets past contenders in his own weight class but get an immediate TS in a weight class above
Talks about Cejudo coming back to fight Volkanovski (lol)
The list goes on and on

Agree 100%. What's pretty grotesque is that people keep asking to add new weight classes like it's not a shitshow already.

I fear mma (ufc in particular) is just following the boxing route

I know money talks, but fighters not wanting to fight for titles is bizarre imo

The difference with boxing is there you don't have a single promoter that dominates the landscape, whereas here the UFC could in theory change course, if they wanted to.

damn what a logic... meanig of belts was killed by ufc with their irresponsible actions...they showed fighters, money doesnt lies anymore within title shot...

True

Boxing's problem is too many promoters, so fights are difficult to make

How ever the ufc is in house and it's much easier to control the landscape

Too many chiefs?
One big boss?

Which one is better?
