So I just started BJJ this week. 2nd class was today. I rolled with a guy who put his forearm and elbow into my neck to keep me pinned but really hurt my throat, so much so i actually tapped. my throat is killing me and i cannot swallow food or drink and it just hurts like a beeyotch. is this normal and will it go away?

If you really can't eat or drink, go to a hospital.

If you just feel terribly uncomfortable with a small bit of achey-type pain everywhere around your throat and neck, but you're managing all right, then that's normal. It should go away in a week or so, while getting easier day by day.

Next time tap quicker. You suck, so remember - Don't compete: Learn.

Happens to me every once in a while. Last time it was so bad I couldn't speak after class (voice kept cracking like I was a teen again), kind of freaked me out. I went to the ER and it ended up being nothing. I can still feel it a little bit after two weeks. Obviously if its even remotely affecting breathing you should get it looked at.

sometimes after a night with a lot of choke drills i feel like i have strep throat the next morning, and maybe for the next day or so. it might just be that.

I've gotten that, but from one guy in particular in class, who goes rough on my throat. I learned to protect myself, and I try not to roll with him if I can help it.

Dealing with the same thing as I type. I feels like a really bad soar throat from being sick. It happens every once in a while.

What your feeling is completely normal and happens to everyone when they are beginning BJJ. Its just a strain in some of the muscles in your neck. It feels just like a sore throat where you can't swallow with out pain. Unfortunatly it will last longer that being sick, usually week or two. But you will get over it soon and it won't happen as much the more you train.

Don't sweat it. It happens when you're new. You'll get a lot of aches and pains that you won't understand right away because you're doing things to your body that most activities or sports don't include.

The good news is it goes away. Your body toughens up and more importantly, so does your head. You figure out what you can take and you push yourself to those limits.

I've had it before for as long as two weeks, and I've heard of it lasting a month for some people

next time turn your head so his forearm isn't directly on your windpipe. it happens sometimes, your body will toughen up

Uh oh...the age old question, how soon should a newbie be rolling?

I would say after about 45 minutes of warming up and doing some drills

I've had that after drilling ten finger chokes. Feels like you have strep throat for a few days. Should go away in a few days.
