Rewatching Gaethje v Poirier and laughed when Justin says "these gloves suck dick, that's what it is!" after Dustin eye poked him at the end of the 3rd. There was a few eye pokes in that fight with Gaethje even losing a point. Wonder what the stats would be if all eye pokes were counted over the years and how many directly impacted the result of the fight. Is there a reason they haven't solved this problem yet?

The refs don't referee properly.
The gloves don't help either but if refs started taking points it'd help.

They do suck and there are other options available which the ufc doesnt care to use.

But at the end of the day, close your fist when you strike. The whole pawing with open fingers should be warned and points taken before the inevitable eye poke, not after.

GOAT move imo. Only the best go for it and dont get in trouble.

Ironic coming from Gaethje, given his pre-KO eye poke on barboza

All they gotta do is take the padding past the finger tips about a quarter inch. And make that fingertip area round and fat. Still leave the bottoms of the fingers open for gripping, but cover the tops and ends of the fingers. It doesn't seem complicated. But I imagine the UFC has a deal in place with whoever manufacturers those gloves.

Take a point for every eyepoke intentional or accidental and I guarantee they would stop

The problem with that is sometimes you want to put your palm on your opponent's forehead to stop any forward momentum, throw them off balance, or to shove their head into an area you want to strike. Which is completely understandable and probably won't ever change. But if the opponent raises up even slightly then all of a sudden your fingertips are in his eyes, whether you meant to or not.
