The Shining had some great scenes. I particularly love the bathroom scene.

Overall though, The Thing. It's one of my favorite movies. Like Invasion of the Body Snatchers (the original), there's just something so visceral about that sort of horror.

Surprised by the lack of love for the shining
I voted for The Thing but The Shining is a truly great movie as well. Probably the better piece of art in fact, but I just prefer The Thing. I love John Carpenter’s movies and have since I was a kid.

Both are great movies. I wouldn’t say The Shining is overrated like some people here are.

I like The Thing a lot more. It seems a lot of the appeal in The Shining is in the analysis and subtext which I'm terrible with. I guess I can't really give The Shining a fair shake. But The Thing for me is a 10/10

Although I tend to think really as with Lynch a lot of this stuff is rather over wrought and looks to "explain" something that was intended to mostly work via tone and atmosphere.

The Shining I think makes sense just with the idea the hotel is haunted by a bloody colonial legacy and Jacks violent nature shows that legacy is still part of society, the 1921 ball is IMHO intended to be the representation of the robber baron era.

Both of these two would be very close to the top of the list for my favorite horrors with Alien and Angel Heart.

I agree that Carpenter is great and shining isn’t overrated.

Me too. I voted the Shining as it's a masterpiece.
Exactly this. The Things is cool and all, but the Shining is a literal masterpiece of film, painted by a genius director. There’s no comparison whatsoever AFAIC.

Agreed. Kubrick left his mark in any genre he touched

The Shining is a good film but is a little overrated, and pales in comparison with the book. Not trolling, just my opinion.
The Thing is honest about what it is - a great B movie.

The Shining is one of the most overrated films of all-time. People wouldn’t like it nearly as much if Kubrick didn’t direct it.
Wud in the.....I had to quote this for posterity sake

this is like saying people wouldn't eat burritos if they didn't taste so good

Your logic is circular and fallacious Seek help

Here come the elitist Kubrick fanboys I was waiting on.

They’re both excellent, but I’ll go with the Shining.

The shining is one of the very few horror movies I actually think is a great film.

They're too different for me. Better "film".... I guess by that you mean "more expertly shot" and that would be Shining. But the effects of Thing are so fucking on point, and they handled them so well.... def better in that regard.

I don't know, man. Don't make me choose.
