D’oh! Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie will return to the big screen after a 20-year hiatus.

A sequel to 'The Simpsons Movie' is officially in the works at Disney’s 20th Century, and slated for release on the 23rd of July 2027. The film has taken the place of an untitled Marvel project, which has been removed from the studio’s schedule. In terms of Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe, there will no longer be a new comic book installment between 'Avengers: Doomsday' on the 18th of December 2026 and 'Avengers: Secret Wars' on the 17th of December 2027.

'The Simpsons Movie' was released in July 2007 to massive commercial success, earning $536 million at the global box office against a $75 million budget. Directed by series veteran David Silverman, the movie’s plot saw Springfield being confined under a massive glass dome after Homer accidentally polluted the town’s lake. A sequel has been in talks for years but nothing has come to fruition until now.

After dozens of seasons and one movie since the show’s inception in 1989, 'The Simpsons' showrunner Matt Selman says that streaming has helped the series not only remain relevant in the cultural conversation but also gain new fans.

“Now instead of the kids watching it on local TV in the afternoon, they can just watch it all, all the time, all day, all forever,” Selman told Variety over the summer. “Being on Disney+ has been somewhat rejuvenating for us. Not that we realized we needed rejuvenation, but we appreciate it.”

Havent seen new Simpsons episode in decades. What are they like in Season 74 now? Also the first movie sucked. Will probably not watch but i started the show from the beginning. Right now in Season 6. Will stop at some point when it starts to fall off.

Nah. The first movie was bad enough. Had some moments, but it barely felt like The Simpsons. I can't imagine how bad this will be, now that the series barely has any identity at all, and is just the familiar characters going through the motions with scripts that feel like they were created by AI.

Two things I took away from this

The first is I thought there would be a better chance of Simpsons finally getting canceled than getting a sequel to the Simpsons movie that was mediocre at best.

The second takeaway is that the first movie was almost 20 years ago!

'07 movie came out at a point well past the series' prime. But even the first decade of the 2000s stuff was closer to the standard of the 9th, 10th, 11th seasons (which were still quite good) than the more recent stuff. I guess you could say the movie really kind of reinvigorated some interest in the Simpsons overall because it was a big hit from what I recall but it's certainly not a stellar film and it doesn't feel like prime Simpsons. It's more like a film that is fun in parts/has its moments.

So I don't think I'll be overly enthusiastic about another one two decades later but I'll certainly give it a watch.

The only way I'm watching this is if it's the Simpsons farewell and there will be no more seasons.

I haven't watched the Simpsons since I was like 15, but I did watch the movie and thought it was good.

This can't be real. Now? Why? No one has watched The Simpsons in years

Unless they are SOMEHOW getting a bunch of the old writers and stuff together... MAYBE it could be ok?

This is going to be literal swill

All three of my kids like the Simpsons, the audience they found with streaming on Disney is showing staying power. I bet this does way better than any of you are expecting.

I was watching some older episodes with my kids recently, and it's shocking how good the show is.

Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire is dark and bright in all the right ways. Whoever came up with the idea for Patty and Selma to be such massive cunts was just brilliant.

New season had some funny self referencial jokes in the Conan cameo

I stopped watching when I moved out of my mother's flat at age twenty. That was eighteen years ago.

I did see a few of the newer episodes on random nights in hotels and self-catering holidays, but they felt weird. I thought that it looked and sounded too clean and high budget.

I saw the first movie when it came out at cinema and I thought the same thing. It started off quite strong but it's momentum evaporated as soon as Homer disappeared beneath that hole.

Some other poster in another thread had it right. Comedies don't hold up well over time. They start off strong but become cumbersome around the middle of their films. All of my favourite TV turned films suffered from this, Bottom, Beavis and Butthead, Simpsons, South Park, Futurama...
