Only recently have I taken up boxing, concentrating on the basic techniques and correct form. I'm loving it so far though, I've got a punch bag in my garage which I've ben using, and there's a few bags at my local gym, including a heavy bag. I've read the FAQ guide at the top but it's not much help with this specific question as I see so many contradictory statements made. I've been using cheap stuff so far when it comes to equipment (wraps, gloves etc.) and I think it's about time I take my interest in the art of boxing a bit more seriously and obviously want some gear to match. I've just purchased some mexican handwraps, used them once or twice and they're definitely great, exactly what I was looking for. Now I'm after an upgrade in gloves, but I'm wondering what Oz would be best for simply punchbag and heavybag training? My hands are on the small side I would say, they're around the 8inches mark when wrapping tape measure around my knuckles give or take a few cms. I've read people say they only train with 16oz gloves as it offers more protection but then I've also read others saying they prefer 12oz gloves, so for me looking in with no real experience of the correct gloves, you can imagine it being somewhat confusing. Of course I want to be safe, but I don't want overly big gloves as my hands aren't that large themselves.

As you can tell, help is needed, and thanks in advance.

I've been looking at Rival's gloves and their Ergo strap system but I've heard the lining inside is somewhat poor. My price range is probably up to around

It probably would be easier to ask your coach or others who train at your gym to see what they use. You can also try on the different brands of gloves from others at your gym to see if they fit you better or if you like.

Now that being said, i use 16oz for sparring, and 12-14 oz for bag work. You can get a good pair of bag gloves if you like those better then a regular oz glove. As far as the brands go, there are numerous threads in the gear review section on different brands, sizes, and price range. I don't train soley in boxing, so i use Muay Thai gloves. Boons 12oz for bag work, and Boons, Top King, and Twins 16oz for sparring.

personally i use 16 oz bag gloves. it just makes my sparring 16 oz gloves feel fast and not bulky. i also dont fatigue in the shoulders. when i wanna work technique i put on my boon bag gloves, theyre xl so i believe they may be 10oz..

Hey bro, just a heads up, a lot of times glove weight (oz) is not indicative of hand compartment size and it varies from brand to brand.

It's really just a personal preference dependent on your goals, strengths and weaknesses.

Generally speaking, "most" super bag gloves are available in 12oz. or 14oz. So, for bag work 12oz. to 14oz., and sparring gloves in 16oz., is a really good place to start. Keep in mind what someone said, there is really no system for measuring internal hand compartment size, and it just increases slightly by ounce weight. Also, the Title Gel World Bag Gloves are very nice bag gloves, but if you are small or a lighter weight, they weight about 18oz's.

lol yea like i said little top heavy but great protection and prob best glove for price
by the way the bag gloves and the sparring gloves are the same besides the cuff but u can pull the cuff tighter on the bag gloves i spar MT wiht ,my bro and havenet had a issue with scratching cause of the bag clove cuff

Thanks for the advice guys. It's a shame that boxing gloves are so cheap on US sites compared to sites over here in the UK. I imagine customs taxes would be a bitch.

From what I've read online, I'm to avoid Everlast generally, look for reputable brands like Title when it comes to bag gloves, any other great bag glove brands generally that seem to provide a good standard of product?

order a pair from thailand.
customs do not mind a single pair of gloves.
you will find a nice pair for about 50€ incl shipping.

You don't have to avoid Everlast, its the cheap everlast you need to avoid. I own said such gloves, and when I am ready I will be getting some new TU's. I prefer larger gloves for bag work personally.

I use 16s for everything. I wouldn't want to use a smaller size on a bag and then spar with 16s and have them feel heavier and slow my shots down. It's all personal preference, though.

I'm not sure what Rivals you're looking at, but I've had RS2Vs and RS1s, both fit me fine and I'm 5'6" with regular size hands. The lining of them is fine, I've never heard of anyone having an issue with them. For the money, I thought they were some of the best gloves around.

I use a pair of cheap Everlasts for bag work. I don't care if my bag doesn't like how they feel. I wouldn't spend a lot of money on a pair of gloves you're gonna use for bag work, they're gonna get chewed up.

Just take it easy when you're starting out so your hands and bones and stuff get used to punching things. More important than the gloves are the wraps, get a good pair of 'mexican style' hand wraps and make sure you wrap your hands well.

try these great price my little bro and one of my trainers have them and like them a lot they feel a little top heavy but for the price you will not be dissapointed

I ve been lookin at these gloves before .One problem i got with them is not sure how to go by the sizes m,l,xl and how they correspond to oz's:((
Wouldnt it be simple and easier for everyone to mark them by weight instead of size:(

I just posted up a new thread on an English boxing gear company:

Lemarr Sparring Gloves

I've never heard of them before, I think they may be a new company. Since they're in England, you might have the chance to try these on first hand and be a pioneer for the G&E forum...:icon_chee
