What the hell is up with this? Matches start from standing for a reason and I see scooting around on your butt like a diseased dog as a chickenshit move personally. Should be a rule against it. Want it on the ground, either learn takedowns and get good at pulling guard.

What's even worse is people doing this when we're just practicing. Why even do this, it's practice so who cares if you get taken down. That's how you get better on your feet, facing people who are better standing.

Anybody else annoyed by this?

The main reason it is done at practice is because Takedowns sometimes take a long time to be executed and other times, exhaust too much energy, take up too much space, and lead to alot of injuries.

And i know in sub grappling you can butt scoot, but i always beleived it was illegal in BJJ tournaments.

yeah that damn marcelo garcia punk, he keeps doing it. luckily its a sucky technique so he doesn't win shit.

right?

Those are some pretty terrible excuses. Space wasn't an issue when the guy did it in practice as there were 4 of us w/ the whole place to ourselves. Exhaust too much energy? If you're not in good enough shape for a few takedowns then you've got some stuff to work on. Injuries aren't something to worry about as we've had 0 serious injuries in the time I've been training at my school. I dunno, personally it just seems like a pussy thing to do.

Its not pussy thing. Pass his guard and submit him if you can...
You have problem with it and it gets you frustated, right? Thats the idea.

In brazilian jiu-jitsu, to PRACTICE jiu-jitsu, we start at our knees, to because the ground is more important to us than the stand up, if you want stand up do Judo.

Lame excuses? You cant have 4 pairs of people doing takedowns in most schools, or people will be running into one another left and right. They waste uneeded energy most of the time since we are only practicing. And getting slammed will always lead to injury sooner or later.

I like takedowns, but they are only worth 2 points, Id rather focus on my subs, which are worth an automatic trip to the next round.

Marcelo Garcia barely does it and when he does it's to set up a takedown. Buttscooting is gay no matter who does it.

bravo wouldve been a better example.
And buttscooting isnt gay, its strategic.

it wouldn't be my first choice, but i don't see why buttscooting annoys you. the guy is basically giving you the takedown without a fight, and letting you start from a way better position than a pain-in-the-ass closed guard. what do you want him to do, stand up and make you work for the takedown? you want top position, and he's giving it to you....what's the problem?

that pretty much sums it up...

I don't like the butt-scoot either.

It is a passive move and is unsightly. You are basically acknowleding that your stand-up is inferior to your opponent and that your takedowns are not good enough to get him to the ground so you have to cheat and lure him there.

It is an unnatural and unsightly thing to do in a fight.

I was pleased to see Sakuraba take advantage of this and beat the shit out of his opponents legs as punsihment for their cowardice.

I think that if the standing opponent elects to back away that the person doing the butt-scoot must be told by the ref to stand and if he keeps doing it he should be penalized.

WTF? cheat? BJJ is mainly ground fighting, you know.

and btw, he means in BJJ/sub-wrestling, not MMA.

It would be funny if buttscooting were to be taught like a technique on a tutorial DVD, lol.

Im assuming you are not refering to his fight vs Allan Goes

Try a unique way to get behind him. When butt scooting, it's hard to turn 180 with ease and it is thusly easier to land in side control/North-South position ontop of the butt scooter. If you want to showboat, try a cartwheel :D

When grapplers(usually pure BJJ players) get in the buttscoot position, its because they know that their stand up(takedowns, throwing, defense) is weak. In order to not get pummeled on the feet and eventually slammed to the back by the better standup grappler, they already go to ground to prevent this.

Theyre not really giving you the takedown, because if they wanted to they would stand up and grapple with you. Theyre sort of pulling guard without trying to engage.

Competitors just need to learn how to capitalize when their opponent goes into the buttscoot position.

OK, yeah I meant in MMA. It's not so much cheating as it is a cheap stalling tactic.

In BJJ and sub-wrestling matches you can argue that it is pure grappling but just the same, trying to ensare someone in the guard by laying on your back vs. pulling them to the guard or taking them down is cheap.

His fight against Royler Gracie is a prime example. Belfort would be another although I understand Vitor breaking his hand.

I just hate the move.
