Ray Fisher Went on Twitter Attack in June After He Was Allegedly Offered Small Cameo Role in THE FLASH Movie

“Justice League” star Ray Fisher went on his Twitter attack against director Joss Whedon in June after he was offered a small cameo role in the upcoming DC Comics movie “The Flash,” TheWrap has learned.

The film, which is aiming to begin production next year with Ezra Miller as the title character and Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck both returning as versions of Batman, is set to include a small role for Fisher as the genetically enhanced superhero Cyborg.

According to two insiders with knowledge of the situation, Warner Bros. has not heard back from Fisher’s team since offering the small role back in June — and plans for a standalone “Cyborg” movie have stalled. Development on that project — which was at one time slated to hit theaters in 2020 — was paused toward the end of 2016, according to one insider.

A rep for Fisher sidestepped multiple questions about “The Flash” offer in terms of timing, size and the state of negotiations. “Mr. Fisher is, and has been, under contract with WB Pictures since 2014,” Fisher’s team at Paradigm Agency and Management 360 said in a statement. “Per the terms of that pre-negotiated contract, the option to include Mr. Fisher as the character of Victor Stone (aka Cyborg) has always rested in the hands in WB Pictures.” Actors cast in superhero roles typically sign on for multiple films and have option clauses to cameo in other superhero movies.

On June 29, shortly after the cameo offer, Fisher launched the first of a series of attacks on Whedon, who stepped in for initial “Justice League” director Zack Snyder on significant reshoots, and then on Warner Bros. for its handling of the 2017 film. First, the actor tweeted that he wanted to “forcefully retract” describing Whedon as a “good guy” during 2017 Comic-Con.

Then in July, Fisher publicly accused Whedon of unspecified “gross, abusive, unprofessional” behavior on set — and further said that it was enabled by then-DC Entertainment president Geoff Johns and former Warner Bros. co-president of production Jon Berg. (All three denied the accusations; Johns and Berg left the studio since the film was released in 2017.)

Warner Bros. launched an independent investigation in mid-August, a move that Fisher initially celebrated. But on Sept. 4, Fisher accused DC Films President Walter Hamada of attempting to interfere with the investigation on Johns’ behalf. The studio denied the accusation and said Fisher never accused anyone of “actionable conduct” and that the actor has refused to cooperate with the investigator during a meeting in late August. (Fisher then publicly questioned the independence of the investigation, which was led by an outside firm hired by studio parent company WarnerMedia.)

The dispute has continued even after Warner Bros. agreed to release original “Justice League” director Zack Snyder’s version of the film as a four-part miniseries on HBO Max next fall. On Monday, co-star Jason Momoa publicly backed Fisher’s accusations about “the s***ty way we were treated on Justice League reshoots.”

Fisher was a relative unknown in 2014 when he was cast in 2016 as Victor Stone, a human whose body is mostly replaced by cybernetics to become the superhero Cyborg. At the time, DC Films announced plans for an ambitious slate of films that included a standalone “Cyborg” film then expected to hit theaters in 2020. But those plans got upended, and some projects — including Ezra Miller’s “The Flash,” originally slated for 2018 release — got pushed back.

Meanwhile, “The Flash” is now aiming to start production in March 2021, subject to COVID-19 shooting protocols.

Warner Bros. Allegedly Turned Down Ray Fisher's Demand for More Money for THE FLASH Movie

5ln17aO.jpeg

In October, director Zack Snyder will roll cameras for his extended cut of Justice League, working for WarnerMedia’s HBO Max division on restoring his version of the maligned 2017 movie that he exited because of a family tragedy. The shoot, which will turn the “Snyder Cut” into a four-episode limited series, is expected to bring back Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman for new scenes. Also set to appear on the call sheet for what is expected to be a week- or so- long shoot is Ray Fisher as Cyborg.

The latter is noteworthy because Fisher is in a public dispute with sister WarnerMedia division Warner Bros., which he accuses of permitting Joss Whedon, the director who took over from Snyder, to engage in misconduct and abuse while reshooting Justice League. Fisher also claimed that executives Jon Berg and Geoff Johns, who both have since left the studio, enabled Whedon’s behavior. (Warner Bros. declined comment. WarnerMedia remains in business with Whedon, whose new show, HBO sci-fi drama The Nevers, is back in production in London.)

Insiders recall to THR that the Justice League reshoots conducted by Whedon were a messy and hastily assembled affair. Snyder left the project in May 2017, ahead of a November release date. Whedon had to cram an extensive rewrite and reshoot and take over postproduction. One person present at the reshoots describes a set filled with tension and says the director was difficult with actors. But this person also says they did not witness physical or other abuse. Johns and Berg were under pressure, another insider notes, as they were trying to deliver a tentpole and knew their jobs were on the line. Whedon did jettison many of Fisher’s scenes, according to sources, and his directing style is described as the opposite of Snyder’s collaborative approach. It also is unclear if Fisher filed a complaint at the time.

Fisher is in talks with Warner Bros. to make a cameo in The Flash, a Justice League spinoff movie due to shoot next year. He has options negotiated for future appearances, including cameos, beyond the initial film. But in earlier drafts of the Flash script, Cyborg was a much more active player than the one in the current script. Sources say the studio exercised its option for Flash, even upping its negotiated price for what’s described as a three-scene appearance. Fisher’s side countered with a figure doubling that. Warners turned that down, and negotiations have remained stalled for weeks.

Billy Crudup to Rejoin Ezra Miller in Andy Muschietti's THE FLASH Movie

Q6m6TYf.jpg

Billy Crudup, fresh off his Emmy win for Apple’s The Morning Show, is in early negotiations to join Ezra Miller in The Flash, Warner Bros.' feature project based on the DC superhero.

“Rejoin” may be the better term here as Crudup has been associated with the long-gestating project since 2016. He was cast to play the father to Barry Allen, aka The Flash, by Rick Famuyiwa but that director departed in October of that year. By March 2018, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein were the helmers but left a year later.

Andy Muschietti now sits in the director’s chair as the movie runs towards a shoot in London in 2021. Crudup stayed on for a while but as the director's and writer's chairs shifted about, he eventually moved on. The actor, however, did play the part of Allen's father in one scene in 2017's Justice League.

Crudup is now making a new deal for Flash, which is suddenly one of the hottest projects on the Warners lot, thanks for the bifecta of having Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck reprising fan-favorite incarnations of Bruce Wayne/Batman.

Kiersey Clemons was also hired to play a key role in Flash at the same time as Crudup but at this stage, it is unclear whether there is interest (on both sides) or availability for her to return.

The script, whose latest draft was written by Christina Hodson, sees Flash go back in time to prevent the murder of his mother, an act that proves to have unintended consequences for his timeline.

Crudup’s recent feature credits include Richard Linklater’s Where’d You Go Bernadette and the drama After the Wedding with Julianne Moore and Michelle Williams. The actor won his Emmy role for playing a network exec on the buzzy Reese Witherspoon-Jennifer Aniston drama that is now readying a season two.

I'll still be surprised if this movie actually gets finished even though it looks like it is back on the tracks.
