Sherdog loves bashing people. Whether it's fighters, coaches, interviewers or other personalities, the right honourable gentlemen of the Dawg all love a good internet bash fest.

One of the greatest insults one can make is call a coach an Edmond. It all started when the original Edmond, Edmond Tarverdyan, rode the wave of Ronda Rousey's success as the first female UFC champion. Rousey, known for armbarring the fuck out of nearly every single woman put in front of her, was extremely successful. That is until she started listening to Edmond Tarverdyan, who had the stupid idea of trying to turn a Judo Olympic Medalist into a kickboxer. After it turned out Rousey's striking was levels below competitors like Holly Holm and Amanda Nunes. Rousey, who was at one point perceived somewhat of a mythical creature, a demi-god almost, got her ass handed to her twice and left the UFC soon after.

But the sport moves on, and so does Sherdog. The original Edmond will never be forgotten, but there are plenty of other coaches looking to follow in his footsteps. And in typical Sherdog fashion, they shalt all be referred to by their nationality first, and Edmond second.

So without further ado, this thread is meant to nominate and discuss some of the greatest Edmonds to ever Edmond. For now, we know who number one is. But which Edmond will be declared the heir to Tarverdyan's throne?

This is: the Battle of the Edmonds.

Here are some popular nominations:

John Kavanagh - a.k.a. "Irish Edmond"
John-Kavanagh-cageside.jpg

Known for his role as Conor McGregor's head coach (and not much else), Kavanagh emerged in the public as the laid-back, zen-like figure that trained The Notorious as he ran through the Featherweight division and became the first double champ in the process. While he appears to be a very balanced and cerebral coach, it's also obvious to see that his brightest pupil hasn't improved his MMA game ever since he captured the Lightweight Championship by disposing of Eddie Alvarez in 2016.

Moreover; Kavanagh's other fighters haven't had that much success on the big stage, with recently Johnny Walker being knocked out (again) after losing a unanimous decision against Thiago Santos.

The biggest implication of Kavanagh being Irish Edmond is that he himself admitted "Conor McGregor knows more about fighting than the rest of (his team) us put together." Which leads most of us to believe; what is McGregor still doing at SBG Ireland?

Henri Hooft - a.k.a. "Dutch Edmond"
Henri-Hooft-696x385_1024x1024.jpg

While maybe not as notorious as a lot of his competitors, striking coach Henri Hooft has had some incredibly talented fighters pass through his gym such as Luke Rockhold, Kamaru Usman and Michael Chandler. While Usman became a champion with a grinding wrestling style under his guidance, he soon left Hooft's camp for Trevor Wittman, who seemed to have improved his striking in record time. Usman later mentioned he craved more specific attention, which Hooft didn't seem to be able to give him. "It's very tough when there are 40 to 50 guys in the room".

Fighters in Hooft's original Blackzillians camp never seemed to be able to put it together consistently. Hooft's gyms have been notorious for sparring really hard, which as we all know can be detrimental to a fighter's health and chin. And even though striking is Hooft's bread and butter, some of his brightest prospects such as Alistair Overeem and Michael Chandler have been violently knocked out, on multiple occasions. Perhaps Hooft's methods aren't as beneficial as advertised, and could be called "Dutch Edmond" as a reward?

This is a dumb list.

Kavanagh is actually a great coach, even your description of him sounds like the guy is very humble.

Very few coaches were able to take a fighter from start to finish and make them a champion, yet he was able to produce the double champ.

What makes it even more impressive is how he was able to do this in a place with no fighters, iron sharpens iron, and he had no Iron, outside of Artem Lobov I guess.

Conor had very little to work with in terms of grappling with high level BJJ guys on a daily basis, you would be hard pressed to find a high level wrestler in all of Ireland, yet Conor's wrestling and BJJ, even though wasn't the best, his grappling was only outdone by the very best, I would say his TDD is far better than Dustin's.

So Kavanagh's gym offers world class grappling and striking.

What Made Edmund special is how he could take high level fighters like Travis Brown who had a ton of potential, and destroy their careers.

Nobody ever got worse at Kavanagh's gym.

Jon Jones didn't start with Jackson's

TJ Dillashaw didn't start with Ludwig

GSP didn't start with Jacksons or Firas

Usman didn't start with Wittman

Etc.

Taking a fighter from Green to Champ is a hard task, and coach that accomplished this is a great coach.

I just saw a thread referring to Khamzat's coaches as "Swedish Edmunds" lol. The term is getting a bit played out, but it's still good for a chuckle.

I read on these forums once that he's the guy who started the MMA scene in Ireland out of basically nothing. That alone is worthy of hespect, even if it's only half true. The lip ring was still really lame, though. No excuse for that.

MMA just seems so multidisciplinary, it makes sense that a fighter goes to all these different gyms and under different coaches to learn as much as they can to be as well rounded as they can.

Irish Edmond fits just because of all the absolutely clueless and blatantly wrong things he’s said. Especially acting like simple game planning was this new, revolutionary strategy. <Lmaoo>

Edmond actually has some decent up n coming boxers in his stable

His issue was he isn't an mma coach, and so his coaching didn't translate well. He used his very amateur kickboxing skills to try and be an all around striking coach, but outside boxing he had very little to offer

Like?? He's brought some great quotes

" doesn't matter how fast the computer is, if it's software isn't up to date "

Something along those lines, but it's a great quote

If coaches qualities are judged by lip rings you know everything you need to know about the quality of knowledge thrown around here.
