Sherdog loves bashing people. Whether it's fighters, coaches, interviewers or other personalities, the right honourable gentlemen of the Dawg all love a good internet bash fest.
One of the greatest insults one can make is call a coach an Edmond. It all started when the original Edmond, Edmond Tarverdyan, rode the wave of Ronda Rousey's success as the first female UFC champion. Rousey, known for armbarring the fuck out of nearly every single woman put in front of her, was extremely successful. That is until she started listening to Edmond Tarverdyan, who had the stupid idea of trying to turn a Judo Olympic Medalist into a kickboxer. After it turned out Rousey's striking was levels below competitors like Holly Holm and Amanda Nunes. Rousey, who was at one point perceived somewhat of a mythical creature, a demi-god almost, got her ass handed to her twice and left the UFC soon after.
But the sport moves on, and so does Sherdog. The original Edmond will never be forgotten, but there are plenty of other coaches looking to follow in his footsteps. And in typical Sherdog fashion, they shalt all be referred to by their nationality first, and Edmond second.
So without further ado, this thread is meant to nominate and discuss some of the greatest Edmonds to ever Edmond. For now, we know who number one is. But which Edmond will be declared the heir to Tarverdyan's throne?
This is: the Battle of the Edmonds.
Here are some popular nominations:
John Kavanagh - a.k.a. "Irish Edmond"
Known for his role as Conor McGregor's head coach (and not much else), Kavanagh emerged in the public as the laid-back, zen-like figure that trained The Notorious as he ran through the Featherweight division and became the first double champ in the process. While he appears to be a very balanced and cerebral coach, it's also obvious to see that his brightest pupil hasn't improved his MMA game ever since he captured the Lightweight Championship by disposing of Eddie Alvarez in 2016.
Moreover; Kavanagh's other fighters haven't had that much success on the big stage, with recently Johnny Walker being knocked out (again) after losing a unanimous decision against Thiago Santos.
The biggest implication of Kavanagh being Irish Edmond is that he himself admitted "Conor McGregor knows more about fighting than the rest of (his team) us put together." Which leads most of us to believe; what is McGregor still doing at SBG Ireland?
Henri Hooft - a.k.a. "Dutch Edmond"
While maybe not as notorious as a lot of his competitors, striking coach Henri Hooft has had some incredibly talented fighters pass through his gym such as Luke Rockhold, Kamaru Usman and Michael Chandler. While Usman became a champion with a grinding wrestling style under his guidance, he soon left Hooft's camp for Trevor Wittman, who seemed to have improved his striking in record time. Usman later mentioned he craved more specific attention, which Hooft didn't seem to be able to give him. "It's very tough when there are 40 to 50 guys in the room".
Fighters in Hooft's original Blackzillians camp never seemed to be able to put it together consistently. Hooft's gyms have been notorious for sparring really hard, which as we all know can be detrimental to a fighter's health and chin. And even though striking is Hooft's bread and butter, some of his brightest prospects such as Alistair Overeem and Michael Chandler have been violently knocked out, on multiple occasions. Perhaps Hooft's methods aren't as beneficial as advertised, and could be called "Dutch Edmond" as a reward?
SHERDOG'S PICKS
Firas Zahabi - a.k.a. Canadian Edmond (@SouthpawSouthernFist / @Hespectfully)
"Nate Diaz beats 99 percent of fighters if there's no time limit"
Joshua "Edmund" Fabia (@Natural Order @ookii)
Ferland Lopez - a.k.a. French Edmund (@Jean-MMA)
Tim Welsh - a.k.a. Redmund
Mentally undefeated as a coach.
Sensei Edmund Seagal - ( @SherdogsMVP @spinup )
