On paper, this is a tough matchup for both fighters; Suarez will maybe not want to go to the ground with Dern due to Dern's jiu jitsu prowess & Dern would likely not be able to get Suarez to the ground even if she wanted to.

Could be the classic two grapplers striking standup battle.

Who wins this one?

Young healthy Suarez I'd bet on vs almost anyone. She was a fucking beast.

I have no idea what is left in the tank after such a long time off and so many injuries.

You got me excited for a sec thinking this fight was booked. I'd love to see it.
Two phenomenal grapplers.

If Saurez is anything like her old self I'd pick her to land TDs almost at will and retain top position. I dont think Dern could get the sub mainly just because I don't think she would spend much time in favorable positions, but she would create a few scrambles to make it exciting.

If Saurez is sufficiently older and slower enough from injuries then Dern might keep it standing and box her up.

I could see that, but man, Dern is so insanely good on the ground. Suarez has excellent wrestling obviously, but I'm just not so sure she could keep Dern on bottom and meaningfully do anything with her time in top. Dern's guard is ridiculous, literal world class. Imo this fight would come down to who the better striker is, and I truly have no idea in that regard.

Also feel like with where they both are in the division, this would be a perfect comeback fight for Suarez to see where she's at.

Healthy Suarez wins this one IMO. I think I'd give her the edge on the feet, and could mix in some TDs if only to score points and steal rounds. I don't think she would want to keep it on the ground for long though. Hopefully she comes back close to 100% and we could see it one day.

I wish I shared your optimism that Suarez would come back in peak form.

But... out for years having neck surgeries and shit sounds horrible. You are a grappler, you know how important it is to be able to use your head and neck for positioning.

I may be biased, having been thru a bunch of surgeries, but they take something from you. You never come back the same or better.

Honestly I think they should give her a much easier match and see where she is at. I'd love to see this match, but probably predicated on it happening after Saurez demonstrates she is still Saurez.

I'd favor Dern in that fight. I think it would look a lot like Askren vs. Maia.

I think if Suarez is healthy, she'll have a better mma career than dern, but I just think dern is a bad match up for her.

Xiaonan Yan is a white belt and Dern couldn’t sub her, I’d have to lean Suarez

I don't know enough about Tatiana's standup to predict her performance in that area. She has power but it doesn't really matter if you can't land a punch. Dern isn't great standing but she also has power.

Probably Dern. Tatiana has been out of the fight scene for 3 years and her last fight was a bit underwhelming.

I like Dern, but at this point I don't think she's insanely good as much as some of her opponents are just unusually bad.

I think she'd beat Tatiana via slightly better striking though.

Too much weight being put on belt color. It's not that simple, but I guess it's a good way to give a simple judgement

I would need a good photo of Derns arse in order to analyse this fight in a professional manner.

I guess so, there are huge discrepancies throughout the belts. But I'm a purple belt myself, and would be shocked if I couldn't sub a white belt... Dern is a black belt, and a very good one.

Also Yan is a lot smaller than Suarez

I think it's a bit of both.
She's a legit jiu jitsu world champion, multiple times I'm pretty sure, so there's no doubt she's basically unmatched on the ground in WMMA.
She doesn't always get the submission on the ground or get enough GnP, but positionally she does dominate all of them.

So much depends on what kind of shape each fighter shows up in. Dern’s first loss came five minutes after she gave birth. Suarez has been banged up.
