I just received a new judogi as a gift, but the size is off. Anyone ever had a gi professionally tailored?

I once had one re-attach the strings that hold the top closed, I stressed it doesn't have to be pretty just strong. It lasted 2 classes.

Personally I would ask them about refund or exchangability before considering tailoring.

Nothing rude at all in telling them they got the wrong size and you want the right one.

An exchange would be best, but if it is too big you should keep in mind that it will shrink if you wash it in hot water or use the dryer so that can oftentimes help with fitting.

I have, to have sleeves shortened and have it taken in where I go in and out where I go out. I stressed that it was going to get heavy-duty use and lots of washing, and she put tape over the seams she altered. Pretty pleased with the result, it's holding up well so far.

In your case if it's an entire size I would see if I could exchange it first though. If not, do some hot washing to see how far it'll shrink, then go the tailor route. Or you could sell it and buy the right size, I guess.

I have done this - but only after I knew the tailor and trusted her work. And I did it with a gi I won in a tournament, so no real risk.

It turned out really well. I gave her a Ouano that was too big ad my shoyoroll that fits perfectly. I said "make the sleeves on this one fit like the sleeves on the other one." She opened up the seams to taper the sleeves and also shortened them. I didn't bother with alterations to the body, but you can get darts put in to make the jacket more snug.

It's actually my favourite gi now.

It all really depends on how good your tailor is and whether they have the right equipment to work on heavy fabric.

I recently had the sleeves shortened on a Gracie Barra competition gi. The tailor took off about 2 inches and the sleeves now fit perfectly. I've worn it to class about 20 times and the sleeves are holding up fine.
