Over the past 6 months or so I have fallen in love with the top half guard position. So much so often I won't even attempt to pass to side control or mount even if the position is given to me. The primary subs I attempt to take from the position are:

1) Japanese Necktie
2) Darce (if the Japanese Necktie attempt fails)
3) Far side straight armbar
4) Kimura
5) Guillotine
6) Howdy
7) Near side arm triangle

I'm sure there are many other effective subs from this position. Please chime in as I'd love to add more weapons to my arsenal.

Back spin knee bar

Rolling toe hold.

Along with kimura/keylock and the brabo choke, these are my favourites.

A near side arm-bar sounds so risky to me. I'd be worried about armbars or the back attack. Do you fight that just by keeping them flat?

Anywho to add to the list, the ezekial choke.

seems pretty pointless to obsess with this position, further positions are much more safe and much more dominant.

I prefer to focus on the pass, because that's how I was taught. Anyway, the classic collar choke and the brabo works fine for me, if I feel like going for it. The "only" problem, is that a good opponent will always give a lot of problems from there (regaining full guard, attack posture and try the sweep and so on).

Anyway, there's a purple belt in my school particulary good at attacking the top half guard. I have seen him destroy other purples half guard game with a direct submission, and speaking for myself, everytime I found there against him I end up brabo'ed, choked in some other way or even armbarred-triangled (this two if i'm attempting a sweep from the deep half). I must ask him some details on this.

In addition to what everyone else has said:

Indian Death Lock
Turkish Ride to side Neck Crank
Rolling toe-hold (to inverted kneebar)
Step-over toe hold / heel hook / calf crush / neck crank.

Please explain what a Japanese neck tie is and also the howdy. Not going to even ask what a Turkish whatever it was :). Tks

In gi, if I have them flat and facing away from me (ie. almost past), sometimes I just go for a Bow and Arrow choke from there. Can usually finish, but I prefer to finish the pass.

Even some of the pure BJJ guys do. It's funny, I've seen a lot of BJJ guys crap on some catch stuff, even The Indian Death Lock which Erik Paulson among others show.

Now the IDL is shown in one of Damian Maia's DVDs as a counter to lock down half guard. But then Maia is a smart cookie - at least when it comes to grappling. I won't comment on his striking :icon_twis

This is an awesome thread...I think more people should post things like this. Just give people a heads up as to what you are working on, whats working, where you are struggling etc. I like to come on here n learn a thing or two that I can go back and work on.....anyway great thread!

i have trouble with the IDL i don't know if im just doing something wrong or if it's easier for shorter guys im about 6'3 so i think that might be why its hard for me to get to my feet

I'm 6'4". How are you doing it? (after clearing any head and wrist control they might have)? Is there a particular foot your having trouble with (the locking one or the free one)?

when im trying to stand i end up losing my balance and getting my posture broken again

I'm confused. Japanese Necktie = Jumping Darce with Gable Grip?

Saywha'?

Take care,

Oli

Okay, done a little more research and saw the BQuick video. So it's basically a Darce, but where you get over the top of them so they can't stretch their neck out? And you can crank the hell out of it?

...not sure it needs another name, but whatever. Will give it a try!

For those who need it:

When you bring your trapped leg up you want its knee off the mat and on them, either their inner thigh or lower abdomen. Otherwise their butt is blocking your leg above the knee and stopping you from getting up easily. Your knees need to be paralell to each other and ideally bent at 90 degrees (like you're kneeling). Push off his chest / diaphragm to straighten your upper body, keep your chin up and look ahead while standing up, your free leg not too near their body so you have base. Once up, pivot your free leg behind before kneeling down to finish - this stops them trying to reach it and go for a sweep.

Watch how Paulson does it here, paying attention to his positioning.
