Of all of the action stars of the 80s I know that Steven Seagal has basically become the biggest Internet meme of them all. And all of the clowning that gets done on him is deserved because the guy has carried himself like an absolute jackass for the last 30 years, just a completely delusional has-been who thinks he can play guitar and still kick ass.

However I wanna give the devil his due. I've been sick at home for the last 2 days and for reasons I can't explain I've been binge watching early Steven Seagal movies. And all I can say is that for a brief moment in his life Seagal was actually a legit badass who made some really entertaining movies. Above the Law, Hard to Kill, Out for justice, Marked for death, and Under siege are all certifiable bangers. If you just wanna have some good mindless fun then all of those early Seagal films will not disappoint.

Out for Justice bar fight

Above the Law bar fight

Marked for Death mall fight

Hard to kill house fight

During which one of these movie productions was the one where he shit himself after getting choked unconscious by Gene LeBell?

The only two good movies of his in my opinion are under siege and executive decision, and in one of them he dies within 30 minutes

I liked him in the two under seige films. But man, he made some really bad films. Usually the best bits of his films are when he's kicking ass.

He inspired me and a few buddies to get heavy into Marshal Arts. We took a year of Aikido because of Seagal before we transitioned to TKD and Kickboxing. The Aikido classes back then were brutal, but we did learn some shit that is extremely useful in self defense and street fighting. Small joint manipulation was great to learn. Getting smashed in the shins and toughening knucks on rope boards was just stupid though.

It's called Martial Science. It provide a way of training.

Above the Law, Hard to Kill, Out for Justice and Marked for Death were all solid action movies. And they definitely had an effect on other martial arts/action films. Before Seagal, the hero and his opponents would trade full power punches and kicks, and at most they'd have a split lip or a small cut over one eye. In Seagal's movies, if someone eat a good shot, they got fucked up. He's also the first martial arts star that I can remember doing prosthetic limb breaks, to make it look like he'd snapped some mook's arm or leg.

Under Siege was the high-point of his career. In no small part because he had Gary Busey and Tommy Lee Jones as co-starts. Unfortunately, it's been all downhill since then.

I don't think he was ever a "legit badass", though. Certainly not compared to other high level martial artists or pro fighters.

Yes. I agree completely. His five movies in a row, were a fucking stellar lineup. The essence of action. To me, there are two Seagals. That one above, and then the other, who I can't take as seriously.

I love the prime seagal movies.

He was a badass action star, but I wouldn't call him a legit badass though as it implies that he can fight for real. Which he can't.
compared to who? i guarantee you, even now, he can beat up 99% of the people on the street. Is he beating UFC guys? no. But if you forget how poorly a regular person fights, go spend some time in the street coliseum

Outside of his movies he was just another Frank Dux.

Are you including women, children, and the elderly in that 99%?

If some 25-year old thug who's relatively similar in size picked a fight with prime Seagal on the street, the thug would fuck him up. Because the thug would take a boxing stance while sensei tries to go for wrist-grabs n shit.

This is the first lesson that UFC taught us... That people who train with cooperative partners instead of resisting partners are actually worse at fighting than people who don't train at all.

Chuck Norris once said he cannot judge Seagal's skills because his movies are all close ups and quick cuts, so i watched Seagals old movie and it turns out this is true. I looked into it further and there actually exist interviews in Black Belt Magazine of Seagal around 1990 shitting on the Hard to Kill director for sucking at making martial arts scenes. Sad that it would only go downhill from there.

I don't care though. I just want to see people getting Kotegaeshi'd to death.
