I'm having a hard time Deciding on how I will work out my training and which I can benefit from the most. I Don't know if Dedicating 5-6 months of just Muay thai and than the 5-6 after that to Jiu Jitsu , or Alternate between the 2 . With the way my gym is set up the Muay thai is Monday and Wednesday and Jiu Jitsu Tuesday and Thursday with No-gI on Saturdays. I would love to go to both but I feel as though I would just slow down my progression if I were to do both at the same time , but I also dont want to miss out for a long time and than forget certain techniques and such. I would train both at the same time if it weren't for the fact that I want to do weightlifting as well, and I know to make proper Gains and such I need a certain amount of Rest in between sessions and such.

If anyone is a similar Situation or w/e and could offer some advice it would be greatly appreciated

Im in a similar situation, and i chose to concentrate mainly on mostly one and take one class of the ther just to maitain some degree of technique/skill.

So i take Thai 3 times a week and BJJ once a week. Its not perfect but its something.

Thanks

Thats something I've been leaning towards , that way once I make the switch I will be pretty comfortable in both and be able to keep sharp to a degree in both

I have always done both but I have heard time and time again that it is easier for a striker to pick up jiu-jitsu than for a jiu-jitsu guy to pick up striking. Just something for you to think about.

Unless it is a schedule or cost issue, do both as much as you can.

If you really care about striking and grappling, weight training is farther down the ladder, and even if you only lift once a week, you'll make gains with proper diet.

You have to decide on your priorities. Obviously you can't do it all at max effort.

I think lifting 2-3 times a week is ideal, but only if you are use to the routine of going to jits or thai for a while )dont know how long you have trained?)

Once your some what comfortable with your amount of grappling or striking throw in 2-3 strength training days. Om doing one upper body day and one lowr body, and doing conditoning twice a week as well. As long as you space it out properly and listen to your boidy you should do fine.

I'm doing both right now, but they feel so seprate in my mind that doing both doesn't feel like it's hindering either.

If anything, I'd say I'm more focused on the BJJ because I like it more, but doing both (plus lifting 2-3x p/w) feels fine to me.

I'd say if you can do both, then do both.

I'm in the same boat as you. I've tried both focusing on one, and doing both at the same time.

It won't slow down your progression to do both but it will be hard on the body, so in that sense it may slow you down. I basically cut a couple days off such that I train 4 instead of 6 days a week, because doing both striking and grappling arts is going to be really hard on you.

Example, I'll get my upper body and shins messed up from kicking and getting kicked, then my joints will hurt and my thighs and arms will be bruised from grappling.

It's your call

Thanks for all the advice , I think I'm going to do Muay Thai twice a week and One bJJ Session and than after a month or 2 make a switch , that way I can stay active in both and still learn. Weightlifting I can do on Saturdays or I can do body weight training instead

I'm just starting a new routine with MT on mon, wed, fri and bjj on tue, thurs. Saturday is for weights, swimming or brushing up on either bjj or MT. I think it's a good way to split it up. I really focus on the standup game and learn enough about the ground game to avoid it! or try to avoid anyway.lol

This is exactly what I do. I was splitting time evenly but found that I was progressing faster in MT. I felt my BJJ was suffering because it comes less naturally to me and I probably need to give it my full attention. So I figured I would rather try to become really good at one thing and then work on mastering other skills. I chose to work MT 3 days and BJJ one day and so far I am happy with the results.

lol well, you sparring in MT yet? Most people would be the other way around - grappling tends to be more intuitive since you got time to think about positioning. Being punched and kicked in the face, not so intuitive to most people :)

^^ Yes sparring once or twice a week for the last 10 months. I've been doing both for about 14 months. Actually I got my blue in BJJ about 4 months ago (gracie-barra st. pete) but I still feel a little slow witted on the ground compared to other blues. In MT I am more advanced (we don't really use "levels" like traditional MT, but I guess I'd be around level 2). Maybe all those years of pretend fighting a pillow while watching "wide world of sports" boxing as a kid on Saturdays paid off. :icon_chee

I would do both. Like you said Thai monday and wednesday and Jistu Tuesday and Thursday

In college I did both and it worked out well - obviously the progression in each is slower, but if you are interested in both, I would go for it

If your goal is being good at both, then I would train in both at the same time.

I've noticed that people who are well trained in either grappling OR striking have a difficult time transitioning and becoming fluent in the other.

If you train in both from the start, you'll already be learning how to make the transition from striking to grappling or vice versa. It'll seem like you're progressing slower, but you're actually getting the "transition" period out of the way, learning to be fluent in both from the start.

Agreed. I often times compare it to going to high school. Each day consists of a number of studies...there's nothing stopping you from earning an A in any of them. LIkewise going from MT to BJJ -- there's nothing hindering you from learning either of them if you train them simultaneously. I've always been an advocate cross-training because if you don't use it--you lose it. Even if only for a few months.

I workout and do supplemental cardio 3x a week. I study Judo right now once a week, and MT 2-3 times a week. I find that it's working well for me. I would like to study judo more often but my current work schedule doesn't permit that.

I was in the stage where i wanted to do both Thai and BJJ. I found that a lot of the things in BJJ came a lot more natural to me than the things in Muay Thai (i did MT for a coupla months b4 starting BJJ) so i have decided to do MT full time until im very fluent with it, and then maybe spend a lot of time on BJJ and do less Thai on the side. Thats my opinion anyways and its cheaper financially and considering im 17 ive got plenty of time to learn.I enjoy Thai more aswell (even though BJJ is a lot of fun). Do whatever suits you, if you enjoy one more than the other, go at that for a bit. Yo u learn faster and get better when you enjoy yourself
