I am experimenting with spider guard these days. For those who are playing spider guard as their A game, what is your game plan in no gi? Which guard do you use in no gi.
Also - question for everyone. Is your gi game similar to your no gi game?

My game is almost 100% the same in Gi and NoGi. I favour underhooks and overhooks, and my main guard is actually a Scissor Sweep, as odd as it may sound- any time I end up on my back, I immediately shoot a scissor sweep with my legs, even if I don't have any grip with my hands.

This either sweeps, or off balances my opponent, or, I use it A LOT as a frame to perform a technical standup to snapdown, to take their back.

Either way, I use it to scramble, or stand up. The only time I use any kind of guard is for finishing my Kimuras from standing.

So like a knee shield full guard? I use z-half/knee shield half a lot. I'm not much of a spider guard player, especially since doing regular multiple rep sets of gi pullups while I weigh 250lbs has caused some kind of permanent injury in my knuckle I can't hang on like that for prolonged periods of time now, but I wondered if (in relation to TS's post) something like knee shield half where the knee is in the bicep and I have wrist control would be along the lines of what he's thinking of... Yeah I know I'm talking half and he is talking full guard (I think) but the concept always makes me think it's a little like a spider half guard kind of a thing or something. I use it when the top player tries to feed his arm through my legs to block my hip and pass, either try and feed it into a kimura, or drive up and into the bicep as I fold in his other leg and come over to top position. But I had wondered about toying around with hanging out in that position during rolling.

Being mainly a spider guard player in the gi makes it a problem for me in no-gi. I am just not as good if you remove my spider-guard from the equation.

Lately I've been finding success in tornado guard Cyborg Abreu style. It works very well for no-gi as well and even better for adcc rules where I can knee-bar or toe-hold off the lift.

I usually only use spider guard for transitions or to shoot a triangle. I don't like focusing on a game that's useless without gi. I also try to use no gi grips as Mich as I can in gi.

Seated guard or butterfly guard, looking for armdrags. Or just good ol' fashioned closed guard.

Mind if I ask what you do when people in no gi go for the lacing pass where they cup your bottom leg and sprawl out?

Or do you just prevent it by keeping your knee pointed into them and keep them working to hard to start?

I play something else entirely.

I find that when grappling with a gi on, I get my grips and pull my opponent towards me. When in no-gi, I usually get my grips and move forward.

Different mentality when I roll gi vs. no-gi.

Spiderguard works better in MMA. Use their end of the gloves as the opponents "sleeves".

I like the scissor sweep but I find it is so easy to get leg locked

One of the reasons of stopping playing spider was that you cannot use that in grappling, MMA, whatever.

My no gi game is X-guard and RDLR. In gi, I use the spider to transition into these guards.

My main problem when playing guard in No Gi is when the opponent is trying to pass standing. If he is trying to pass low, I use butterfly or closed guard. Once he stands up, if I'm playing without leg locks I find it very difficult to sweep him. X Guard seems a great option to me, but I haven't practiced it enough yet.

Closed. But, I play closed in addition to spider in the gi...so yes, I do lose a certain part of my game in no gi. Don't care, though. I rarely do no gi anyhow, like gi a lot better.

Wrist control no gi spider guard! just kidding, I like playing around with butterfly, DLR and X... maybe a little inverted if I get pushed around. I try to mix it up no gi because I find it a much faster style. I don't want people to get comfortable and set up their passes.

I mean, yes and no. It's true if you're not mindful of it and don't work on your leg locks. But if you know there's a chance of a leg lock, you should be ready to counter and pop up right over them.

Don't think you are allowed to grip inside an opponents gloves.

LOL. You're not. You can grab your own shorts and gloves, but not the opponent's.
