Dragonlord’s Review of SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE (No Spoilers)
Bottom Line: With a fast, fun, frenetic pace, a lovable bunch of characters and a killer soundtrack, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a blast and surpisingly the best animated movie of the year
[Apologies. Do not have time to write a more structured review yet. Just want to post my quick thoughts. Might edit this at some point.]
I could already tell by the first 15 minutes that this was going to be good (an 8/10 at least). It’s just a great origin story and they absolutely nailed their depiction of Miles Morales and his life, making him extremely likable and the audience immediately connecting with the main character.
The supporting characters are wonderful. Peter B. Parker was terrific as the washed-out mentor whose storyline was equally as engaging as Miles'. Spider-Woman (or Spider Gwen to comic book fans) was charming and could easily carry her own movie. Spider-Man Noir (voiced by Nicolas Cage) was hilarious. Spider-Ham was under-utilized but still enjoyable. Aunt May and Mile's dad were a delight. I also like the reinvented and more menacing Prowler.
The computer animation was impressive. It takes a few minutes getting used to the choppy frame rate but after a while you get immersed with the incredible cel-shaded art style and zippy comic book page approach as well the awesome action scenes and the nuanced facial reactions (actually it’s a norm in animation for decades now but I guess this movie did its job well because I’m invested in the drama). In order to make a successful Spider-Man movie, it has to have a lot of heart. Spider-Verse has it in spades.
The music is amazing, it's fun, vibrant, energetic and, more importantly, memorable. Daniel Pamberton’s composition is one of the best superhero score I’ve heard in a while. It’s absolutely on point and so is the fantastic soundtrack which includes Post Malone, Swae Lee, Nicki Minaj, Anuel AA, Juice Wrld, Lil Wayne and Ty Dolla Sign.
The touching Stan Lee tribute is probably the best cameo appearances he has ever made, not to mention the most meaningful and poignant in light of his passing and his relationship with the Spider-Man universe.
Love that they weren't afraid to make fun of themselves with the early reference to the infamous dancing scene from Spider-Man 3.
Stick around for the post-credit scene. It’s geektastic (especially if you know your comic book stuff) and absolutely hilarious (especially if you know your Spider-Man TV history).
Rating: 9/10
