what are your favorite tactics?:
specific counters, punches, kicks vs
the opposite standing opponent?

for example when orthodox fighter throws straight right,
southpaw steps to his left and nails the left straight... so on...

I'm a Southpaw. The Southpaw jab is pretty confusing for orthodox fighters because it comes over the top of their jab-hand if you do it right. Cross comes right down the pipe. The Southpaw right-hook can also be very helpful. Southpaws who stand still tend to get dismantled, but when a goos Southpaw circles the orthodox fighter it can also make things pretty confusing.

This is one thing I have a lot of trouble with. Im not good at fighting against south paws and yet i am good at changing stance to keep my opponents guessing. Any advice?

If you can fight both sides then with Southpaws, switch to Southpaw and do no different than you would fighting orthodox versus orthodox. One thing Southpaws tend to be confused about is fighting other Southpaws because they rarely get to spar each other. If you use the orthodox stance against the Southpaw, the straight-right is called the "Southpaw Killer". But don't sleep on the left hook either. And of course, circle left, away from the power-hand.

Im ok at switching stances, i do it against some people. Not an expert by any means. But thats a good idea. What do u find are the biggest weaknesses to the southpaw stance?

One thing that I find helps when sparring a SP is the footwork/placement. Try to keep your lead foot on the outside of theirs. Their lead legs is a nice target for the inside round kick, and you're a little further from their rear "cross" while yours is nicely lined up with their center.

I find that when I switch to Southpaw while sparring it really throws the other guy off. My right jab lands like crazy and has some nice power on it. Good comments so far guys... I am going try some of that out.

When your orthodox opponent throws a jab of any sort, they put their weight on their lead leg. So I watch for the jab, and throw a quick outside leg kick whenever a jab comes out. With their weight down on that lead leg, they can't pick it up to block you. It's a great setup for combinations.

im orthadox and i find the best thing to do is nock a southpaws jab out the way before they get the chance 2 throw it then counter with a big right...... just my way.

I'm Southpaw and I find slipping an Orthodox Jab and throwing a straight left simultaneously very effective. My fav technique.

My best best against a right hander is my jab. However, I always seem to eat a lot of hooks. What can I do to cut down on this KK?

I'm confused. Are you a Southpaw who wants to step eating left-hooks from Orthodox fighters?

Yes, I am a southpaw who wants to stop eating hooks from orthodox fighters. The best guy in the guy always feints a hook to the body and hits me in the head with his hook. I get so frustrated because I always fall for it. The only way I can stop it so far is by being really aggressive. But I need a different tactic because it tires me out. Does that make any sense?

im a southpaw.. try to keep the guy inside of your lead foot, closer to your power hand.. even though my right arm is stronger its easier to land shots when the guy is inside of your lead foot.. try checking them with lead leg kicks and body kicks to keep them inside.. if your an orthodox stance try getting on the outside of thier lead foot staying away from that back left hand..

the SP stance throws alot of people off because usually when you see two righties they have that circling motion when they square off.. that throws of orthodox fighters because they have to circle the opposite way than they usually fight to stay away from the power hand..

Sure, makes perfect sense. Well one thing you can do is time him. You know he feints to the body then comes up for the head right? Clock him and when he comes high you got either the straight-left (which should work best), or the left upper-cut if you throw it short and tight.

Now strictly defense? That's a little tougher. If you step right as he throws the body hook the head-hook shouldn't land. Because he'd have to move his feet to be set to throw it with power or risk being off-balance. If he throws when you move I think you'd be in good position to hit the 1-2, or a right hook of your own. If he re-sets, well then you can pressure him, or step out and be completely safe.

Last option is to just duck/move your head after he throws the body-feint.

Train those up to be quick then try them out.

Thanks, it might be hard because he is really quick, but I'll try that next time I spar with him.

If he's quick spend most of your sessions working his body. That takes away quicks. Dont't be afraid to punch his arms either.
