I'm sure Microsoft will appreciate your Game Pass revenue.
I tend to read that comment as anxiety management. After all, a little over a year ago, Sony execs were insisting, "Sony still believes in generations". That went out the window, and they bend over backwards now to continue accommodating PS4 gamers with releases. Ironically, the last I counted it up, in July,
the total number of "next gen exclusives" counting announced releases was greater for the Xbox. Nevertheless, Sony knows theirs is the inferior machine, so I don't doubt they know they must maintain some level of software leverage as an incentive for their console. But the branding clearly indicates Sony intends to expand their PC releases which will continue to erode their "full" exclusive library. Ultimately, it isn't controversial to point out that Sony has been playing catch-up this generation with Microsoft, not the other way around, when it comes to matters of policy and strategy.
From the PC player's perspective this attachment to console exclusivity seems silly. And Day 1 is nice, but in my opinion, timing matters most with multiplayer-focused games (since popularity wanes fast), or at least those with Co-Op. For single player games, 1-2 years doesn't seem like a big deal, especially when the console generation lifespans are now 7 years. Meanwhile, multiplatform games continue to dominate sales.
