Song Yadong

I am going to catch a lot of shit for this but I think Song Yadong is quickly becoming one of the more overrated fighters on the roster. Yes he is only 24 years old but he made his pro debut in 2013 which is before Cory Sandhagen or Kyler Phillips did which are Yadong's last two losses. He also has 26 professional fights, his ring craft and footwork are pretty bad, he tends to just follow guys around the cage. While he packs a punch and has good hand speed with a strong chin, his striking selection and the ranges where he is actually effective are both pretty limited, and his knockout power? I'd say pretty overrated and it seems either no one saw his fights vs Chito and Stamann or they just forgot, many thought Yadong lost to Stamann and Chito, and a split decision vs Kenney.

Yadong looked pretty solid having two competitive first rounds vs Cory, but Cory was coming off a year layoff and consecutive losses, he still was pulling away with the fight in the 3rd and 4th pretty clearly. Also not the best look to be getting taken down multiple times by one of the divisions worst wrestlers. Yadong is 24, but he started his pro career at 16 and is pushing 30 pro fights. His game is still pretty limited amidst a division of complexity. Munhoz is a fine next fight, I think that would be a proper passing of the torch considering Munhoz is still somehow ranked despite being 1-4-1 in his last 6, the guys also 36 years old.

I may get flamed as well, but I tend to agree -- there are young guys that I feel show more promise. Song has solid potential still, but honestly I feel he has also had a lot of luck. I felt he lost to Chito Vera, lost to Cody Stamman, and although he is dynamite on the feet with his power, it seems that if high level fighters can survive the opening round, they tend to be able to figure him out. I am not saying there is no way he becomes champ. In fact, I feel he is still incredibly dangerous... I do feel, however, that he needs to address some of the holes in his game to convince me (not that my opinion matters) that he is among the upper echelon. He aquitted himself very admirably against Sandhagen and had bright moments, but some of the subtleties left a bit to be desired. His scrambling ability and takedown defense improvements have shown by his training at TAM, but a higher level wrestler likely won't have as much trouble taking him down, and he seems a touch single dimensional. I am very much so looking forward to seeing him progress (as evidenced by how long this post is), but I do feel he was rushed to the top of the division too fast.

Song has got a ton of talent, power and athleticism, but he’s probably reached his ceiling training at Alpha Male.

I’d like to see him at a new camp with trainers focusing on the fundamentals with him - throwing more volume, showing more feints to make reads off, tighter footwork focused on cage-cutting, working behind a jab, etc.

He’s good enough to hang with the elite which is impressive at BW, but the age thing is deceptive since he’s been in the game a while so has a ton of fight experience and mileage already.

Would hate to see him go the Jordan Mein route - starting super young and getting stuck at the wrong camp can be a bridge to nowhere typically.
