I've started watching Sumo on the side, slightly late as I started watching shortly before one of the GOATS Hakuho retired.

Why should you care?
1. The entire thing is full of pomp buildup and hype. The build up is what a real fight night is made of.
2. Fights are quick and tense, Although gambling is illegal in Japan Sumo wrestling is basically made for it.
3. There's a lot of depth and culture that goes into the ceremony of it all. You study or have interest in Japanese it's definitely worth watching

The top vvideo goes in depth on throwing's technique

I started watching Sumo in 2009. I was bummed out about it by 2011 with all of the top matches being fixed

Watching Sumo is pretty dang fun if you're bored, those dudes are legit trees.

There used to be a great sumo thread years ago I think in the grappling forum. Love sumo. Wish it was more accessible in the states to watch.

I got the chance to see it live in Tokyo once, it was so fun and exciting. The slaps are so loud IRL. Yakuza ties are kind of an open secret as well.

there's always a solid thread in the grappling subforum, every tournament
@Fork is the master of ceremonies. ask him to put you on his tag list if you want. it's fun.

I missed my chance. I was in Kyoto during a major tournament but I was sick as hell on the day. Had my second meal in Japan at a restaurant right outside the Ryōgoku Kokugikan. The food I ate actually got me into cooking.

thanks for the mention @Fox by the Sea

always great to see sumo getting brought up here. we've been doing threads for every tournament over in the Grappling Forum, so definitely head over and join us! the most recent thread is here: SUMO - 2022 Kyushu Basho (Nov. 13th - 27th). i'll add people who express interest in the sport here to the notification list for the next tournament in January as well.

will do!

The headbutts are brutal. It's not part of the game but the way they collide with each other. You clearly see clashing of the heads.

Put it on ur bucket list sherbro seeing live is so awesome, I like all the showmanship and tradition as well. I was thinking it would be fun like a solid 7/10 but was 9/10 I was blown away

I went to the sumo when I was in Japan, was one of their big tournament days. Was cool, sat there drinking 5 dollar beers and watching the fights. They're all very short, I think the longest was around 30 seconds.

Managed to get a photo with a sumo who was lining up for some sushi ha ha, you have to be a bit careful because they are revered but he was ok with a photo.
