What's the secret behind a hard snapping punch? I'm posting this because I just watched a new interview with Shane Mosley talking about the WAY Pac hit him was the reason it knocked him down. The snap was what made it feel a certain way.
Here's the interview he starts talking about it around the 5 minute mark. Interesting read.

Here's the knockdown:

I can't tell if it was actually a snapping punch or what but it is pretty fascinating all the fighters mosley fought and he claims pacquiao a punch felt the most impact.

Thoughts?

obviously proper punching mechanics and being relaxed while punching/not pushing your punches but once you have done everything technically you can it's simply genetics the difference between Pacquiao and let's say Maruez who has very sound punching mechanics is genetics.

Pacquiao is more explosive both hit hard probably equally as hard if Marquez doesn't even have a little bit more raw power but Pacquiao's punches have more snap.

See also the different kind of power there are punchers who just had raw power and strength like Golovkin and Foreman and then there are punchers whose power is more based on speed and snap like Tyson and Pacquiao (not that they don't have raw power as well).

But of course work on it as much as you can work on it meaning proper punching mechanics, being able to relax/not being stiff and maybe for a small part plyometrics and exercises that help a little bit with explosiveness

Cool article.....anyone want to back it up, though... On his theory of the snap how he describes? Is it correct/ worth trying to learn?

Find time and visit me, I will punch with and without the snap, proof enough for you?

Lol I'm not saying it doesn't work but there's a time and place for everything. When should I "dig" a punch or "push" one?

In short, if you have the physique to throw a solid punch just by extending the arm - this is already good enough. I guess, you, like many many other athletes, even top pro, do not possess such physique. So, the next step would be the two stage approach:
1. throw the shoulder into punch
2. the arm snaps at the shoulder

Answering your question, now you gotta learn / develop

1. proper technique of throwing the shoulder into the punch, which is usually done with the help of legs, waist, spine (pulling the other shoulder backwards)

2. developing the elastisity of the shoulders and other mucles groups around it

For that, you gotta practice the snap like Tyson:

That link was interesting. I think I am understanding the snap part on the hooks. Bringing the shoulder first as the spring, but is it different for a straight?

Also what do you mean by 2, the arm snapping at the shoulder?

hmm... snapping is so difficult to explain. i skimmed the article but i think it is on track. on the hook, i was told to slightly raise my elbow up and snap it slightly downwards through the opponents chin while turning my shoulder inwards. the hook starts out like a jab.

Let go of your hands when you punch. Don't try to control them, let your body do the work.

The real "secret" is throwing a punch 10,000 times.

What I usually tell people is, do you know when you snap a wet towel to make it crack at the end? Its the same movement, visualize that.

I support this. Tyson was reportedly practicing uppercuts in the mirror for 20-30 minutes daily over several years. This is the reason why he had that great snap.

Tyson fury shows the snap:
