Place where I train at just started having nogi classes and im looking to get some mma shorts. However I'm not sure what size to buy. Normally I have around 30 waist size and I buy 32 size shorts just for some slack when wearing regular casual shorts. Is this the same for mma shorts? Or do I just go straight to 30 for a secure/tight fit? Whats the rule with mma shorts. Thanks.

You're going to want a tighter fit for MMA shorts, so they don't fall off. I recommend starting off with sprawl as they are reasonably proce, high quality, and provide some stretch so that if you fluctuate weight you're still fine.

With that said I'd but a 30 sprawl

Say you are in between sizes (like small or medium), would you go smaller or larger?

Depends on the brand, but for hayabusa bigger, venum smaller, sprawl smaller. Sprawl are the most comfortable beginner mms shorts.

I find that mma shorts usually run big so I get one size down from my waist measurement. (I am size 38, but I get size 36). Some even go bigger and I have to get 2 sizes smaller. It also depends on the brand, if you have a specific one let us know.

I was looking at the grips miura shorts, punchtown also got my interest and maybe hayabusa... (looking to get the grips though)

Thanks for the replies.

go to mmawarehouse.com just about all there shorts they sell has a size chart with recommendations

I'd go with 30 since MMA shorts do run a tad larger.

I actually wear size 30-34 depending on what I'm using them for.

Warrior Shorts are elastic so it stretches.

Dunno about grips (safe to say they will fit about the same), but for punchtown and hayabusa I would go 30.

If you want it snug, go 28.

Hey bud,

Could you describe the fit of the punchtown shorts? I prefer a shorter and slimmer fit like the Koral MMA cage or MMA pro shorts.

bjjhq lol

Thanks in advance!

Hayabusa runs true to size, and it's got elastic waistband with a drawstring. My jeans/pants sizes are 32-33 and I have a M for Hayabusa, fits perfect. I can put it on without opening the velcro and tighten it with the drawstrings

Punchtown runs large, doesn't have an elastic waistband but the material is slightly stretchy. I can still squeeze it up without opening the velcro fly, and then tie it with the drawstrings, although the waistband will bunch up sightly.

I bought the Venum in S, doesn't have elasticity at all, still a bit loose, had it returned in exchange for the Punchtown.

On a separate note, I would recommend Quiksilver Cypher boardshorts. Unlike cheaper surfing boardshorts, these are made out of 4-way stretch materials throughout. Certain designs have velcro pockets which doesn't affect MMA training, while others have a zip pocket which u can stuff it in. The lace-up fly has not in any way interfered with my training too. Most importantly, they look good and are waaay cheaper than MMA shorts

Im actually liking the quicksilver cypher shorts... what do you have to say about their sizing?

If you don't wear compression shorts underneath the punchtown, it sticks to your leg:/

I wear TapOut shorts all the time for either training or as board shorts.

Fits well and doesn't stick to your legs when you get sweaty.

Tighter fitment on MMA shorts is definitely the way to go. I absolutely despise people who sag their MMA shorts and flaunt their ass cracks for the entire gym to see. :(

They're true to size. My pants/jeans are normally 32-33, and a size 32 fits greats. I've got both a size 32 and 33, and the only reason I bought the 33 was because that particular design ran out of 32s at the time. But they fit good too. And I love the design.

This is my 33.

White Punchtown shorts are pretty transparent too when wet. I once ran 5km in their shorts and my underwear could be seen through it.

I find that happens with white shorts, especially clinch gear. Just wear compression shorts or boxers underneath and you'll be fine.
