Hello everyone. I've been lurking around these boards since I started BJJ about 6 months ago. The G&E forum has been helpful and entertaining as I have gathered the gear needed for training with and without the gi. I've read a lot of posts discussing the Sirius ultra-lite gi, but I have never seen a comprehensive review with photos. A month or so I purchased a Sirius. I hope some of you find this review helpful in deciding whether or not to purchase this gi.

The specific model I've got is the traditional ultra-lite gold weave, in white. My point of comparison is the Koral Classic that I have been using for almost five months. The criteria I am concerned with are fit, comfort, features, and price.

Fit
I am 5' 11' and about 195 pounds. I ordered the A3 traditional style from budovideos.com because Sirius themselves were sold out. Out of the packaging, the jacket was a bit big but the pants were perfect. I washed the jacket in cold water and dried it on medium heat for 10 minutes at a time until I got the fit I wanted. I like the length on the sleeves, though some may consider them a bit short. There is a bit of bagginess in the body, but it's not excessive. I probably would have dried it more if I were not concerned about the sleeves shrinking too much. When the kimono is pulled closed, the hip splits ride right on my hips where they should be. The skirt is longer than the one on the Koral, so the lapels don't get pulled out of my belt as often.

The pants have an enormous waist, but so do the Koral pants. When I have the waist cinched up over my hips, the cuffs come right to my ankles. Wearing the Koral pants the same way results in a slightly higher cuff. I've got big thighs, but I've got enough room in the Sirius pants, while the Koral pants are a little more form-fitting in the upper leg area.

Comfort
The Sirius jacket is very soft and light. Even after a wash on cold and a hang dry, it retains its softness and flexibility. My Koral sets up very stiff and scratchy. I would not want to wear the Koral jacket without a rashguard after hanging it dry, but the Sirius is as comfortable as a bathrobe. Though nominally a gold weave, the Sirius jacket gives the impression of being thinner than Koral's, which I would consider a single weave. Despite this, I find the Koral much more breathable and cooler when training. The Sirius can get floppy and clingy when saturated with sweat.

The Sirius pants are soft as well, despite being considerably heavier and thicker than the Koral pants. As I said before, they fit me much better as well.

Features
First off, I love the collar on the Sirius. It is thick and dense. Though I'm well aware that one shouldn't rely on a collar as protection against chokes, it is a nice safety blanket. My training partners have a hard time grabbing and holding on to the Sirius collar, since it does not deform easily. While the Koral has an adequate collar, it is rubber, so it is much easier to grip and manipulate. A downside of the Sirius collar, and a flaw that rubber collars are presumably designed to address, is the drying time required. It takes about a full day, hanging, to be fully dry. The Koral dries in about twelve hours. Not a huge problem, since I've got two kimonos now. The dryness of the southern California summer should also increase drying rates in a few months.

The other key feature of the Sirius is the tie system on the pants. There is a rope tie, instead of a fabric tie, which makes a world of difference. Tangling within the waistband is greatly reduced. I can pull the rope tight without thrashing around like a hooked marlin. Even better, there are three loops, instead of two. This helps keep the front of the pants from dipping under the knot and falling down, even though the rope is tied tight.

Price
Koral: $145.
Sirius: $95.
'Nuff said.

Conclusion
The Sirius ultra-lite gold weave deserves the praise it has received, especially at this price point. The pants are stellar, from the fit, to the fabric, to the tie system. The jacket has a great collar, but could be a little more snug in the body. I would like a more fitted sleeve cuff as well, but the already short sleeve length prohibits me from drying this baby again. Time will tell if the durability is there, but I have a good feeling. If this one or my Koral springs a leak, I'll be sure to post about it here.

Nice review. I would like to see some bigger pics though.

Sirius is in my top 2 also... Very nice kimono. I am a bit bigger, so it was tailored for my ass :)

I like my Sirius gi's, but I personally HATE the rope ties in the pants. Quite a few guys at my club agree. I find when they get "waterlogged" from a long session they swell and can be really difficult to untie. I've considered just cutting them to get out of them more than once. After a few months I've found they get hard to pull tight when putting the pants on as well.

It's the only thing I don't like about mine, I love everything else.

I have two of these Gi's (White & Black) the pants can be a bit difficult to tighten up after you've owned them for awhile. That's the only problem I've ever noticed by far my favorite brand of Gi though.

I've just received mine today, blue ultra light. Haven't worn it in class yet, but it fits me great. I just ordered another one in white.

I've read various posts about the level of shrinkage and some negative comments on the rope tie system of the pants in other threads as well. Those are the only things making me hesitate to get this gi, because it really does seem like a great gi at a good price.

Are the newer Sirius gis better than previous year's models? I ask because many of the posts complaining about them over-shrinking were a few years old.

My friend owned a sirius gi ...I remember it to be very soft..

As for the rope tie system..i prefer that over the gi drawstring. Gi drawstrings are just a pain in the ass.

How has the shrinking been on your new Kimono? I am hoping that the new Sirius do not suffer from the same over shrinking as the older material.

Thanks,
JD

I have an blue a3 gold weave. It's like a bath robe... very soft, at least in comparison to other kimono's I've worn, those being a HCK and a Toraki BJJ.

It's still pretty new, that is, under a year of wear... so I'm curious how that "softness" holds up and if it will turn all floppy on me.

As of now, I thin k it's a wicked kimono with a very good price. I recommend it. THe only negative that I may have is that the sleeves seem to be a touch short. But I too have slightly money long arms... soo...

I have an older Sirius, love the Gi but the shrinkage was bad, so decided to buy the Ultra light thinking that they may have changed something, no luck. Washed it 3 times in cold water hung dry, wore it to Pan Ams, they almost did not let me wear it to compete. Both gis started out just a little big, but have continued to shrink ever since.

Same here...shame as it was a nice looking and feeling gi. Would never buy a gi from them again unless new Gi's are shown to wash better....love their short sleeved rashguard though.

I have their Ultra-lite gold from late 2008. It washed just fine. I also dryer shrunk it and the amount of shrinkage was acceptable. My only complaint is that the Ultra-Lite is very heavy. It is actually heavier than my Atama #5. I would hate to feel how the non-ultra-lite weighs.

Hello,

My two cents:
These gi are without a doubt, the best 105 dollar gi made. You can spend more loot, but you won't get any more gi unless you get into the Koral MKM 190 dollar range.

Sweet fit, finish, stiching, collar, embroidering, etc. The pants rule (almost as good as Atama)

They appear to be identical to the Gameness Platinum, but the 550 g weave, not the ridiculous 750 g double/platinum weave or the wimpy 450 g single weave.

The skirt is a tiny bit long, but great for lanky guys that are sick of their gi flopping around when it slips past your belt.

Note: machine drying will do terrible things to this gi, like any other

I think this is one of the most recent threads on Sirius gis (unfortunately found very few of them).

After about two years, how do you find the gi holding up? And you said you're 5'11" 195 pounds and the gi top was still loose? Did you try to shrink it down any more to fit in the body, or were you too worried about the sleeves? Thanks.

Ok so instead of creating a new thread i'm just gonna post here.

I recently just ordered a used Sirius Gold Weave A3 off of ebay lol

My body
So i wear XL tshirts that are neither baggy nor tight fitting on me, i wear 34 waist and 30 length jeans/pants. I am roughly 5'10-5'11 you can take your pick. I also am not slim nor am i fat but i right at this moment i am 176 and from about 1 month and a half ago i was 190 and i definitely do not see a difference in my body. But i do have a beer belly, bitch tits, and i guess im bigger than normal.

The gi
Ok so my first and only other gi is a fuji single weave A5 that i dried and it shrunk so bad so i do not have anything to compare to the sirius on sizing matters. But as opposed to the material, the sirius is definetely heavier when i was carrying the box i was thinking wow.. this is pretty heavy but again i only had a single weave before and never tried on a gold, it is also thicker and rougher. The collar is thick as hell too. The inside is kinda rough for those of you who go commando style on the gi jacket.

The gi jacket is the right length, the sleeves are a little bit longer than i would like it to be. The only thing i dont like about this gi is that the arm pits and shoulders have alot of extra room in it, so it makes the gi look baggy from the top, and it gives another grip for other peopel because i can definitely grab on to the gi on my arm pit area. but the outside seems softer than the inside so if anything wash this gi inside out.

The pants are good theyre the right length, but if it comes down to shrinking i dont think it will matter much, because it lays right under my ankle. It isnt the softest pants but it is thick and itll probably withstand everything.

the wash
So i contacted the seller about how he washed the gi, and he said he hand washed and hung dry. Its believable because the A3 peaks at 6'1 200. And so i tried it on right out of the box and the results are in the picture. (it smelled ok so i dont think there was a problem about the gi being dirty lol).

I put it in a wash cycle on cold and put it in the dryer for about 15 minutes and i think it mightve shrunk a little? so i took it out, afraid that i would unproportionally shrink it and ruin the whole thing. So i wouldnt advise you to dry it at all.

End opinion
Do i like this gi? Yes. Why? Because there isnt really much to complain about that would make a whole lot of difference. The main thing i look for in a gi is the fit, i dont want one too small or too big. As for softness, i wear a rash guard so it doesnt matter.

Would i buy this gi again? Yes/no. Yes because like i said there is almost nothing to complain about. and the main thi As for sng a person should look for is the fit, and it fits pretty OK in my opinion.oftness/collar i wear a rash guard and idc about chokes so it doesnt matter to me. The reason why i would say no is because i feel like there are better products than this but if it comes down to this gi being the only ~100 dollar one, i would not complain about buying this gi at all.
