I have been training MT for about 6 months and when i do a lot of work with my hook my shoulder is sore for a day afterward i thought it was due to my muscles not being conditioned for that type of movement and force hitting the heavy bag but it still happens. any ideas as to what is causing it and /or how to fix it or build the muscles/ joint?

Hey dude.

I was just about to ask the same question. When hitting the bag for awhile the left hooks really seem to take a toll at the back and front of the shoulder.

If anyone out there has any adivce e.g Strengthening exercises, technique it would be much
appreciated.

Rotator cuff injury perhaps?
Get checked by physiotherapist if possible.

Thats because you re trying to hit hard and use shoulder power instead you re whole body....relax,twist your body, raise your elbow and hook will be there...its all about tehnique

What he said ^^^. It got pretty bad with me, I couldn't throw a left hook for about a year, seriously. I didn't stretch properly, I weight trained the wrong way and I used my arm too much. Now I can, but only with a vertical fist and its still not what it was. Do some shoulder rehab exercises, stretch, watch the technique.

I'd say it's all technique. Elbow too high for example when throwing hooks really takes a toll on your shoulder. If you have a good instructer, have him watch your technique, and adjust it.

Could be that you're throwing it with your shoulder, as other posters said.

Could be your rotator cuff, if when you throw it, it feels like it clicks before it impacts.

I had the same problem when I threw left hooks with the thumb up, and I found it went away when I threw the hook with the thumb toward me.

Try it out.

Get it checked out. My shoulder pain ended up being a combination of a torn labrum and burcitis.

May be tendinitis or something.

I had tendinitis in my shoulder from working it too much, or something, had to lay off for a few months.

Thanks for the replies.

Ive been working on my technique and have found it helps alot after a long session. I might also do some rotator cuff exercises too tighten up my shoulder.

I was concerned it may be a rotator cuff but have never have never injured it in the past thanks for all the good insight and tips will try them all and see what helps.

It could be impingement syndrome. Im only 28 and had shoulder pain from lifting weights and working above my head with my hand raised above my head. Its quite common. 3 months of physical therapy which included proper warm up of the muscles in that area, along with rubber band work out focusing on strenghing the muscles in your shoulder, followed by streching and a ice pack. shoulder feels good now. still get sore when i push a little to hard somtimes though.

I got my shoulder checked out by our team physio/chiro when this happened. He found it was my subscapula and did ART on it, and showed me some stretches. It's a lot better but it's still not gone yet.... let me know if you find any good exercises for this muscle.
