Should The Lopez Fight Have Been Stopped?

Honestly, im happy it was stopped, say what you want if it should or shouldn't have been stopped, its whatever for me personally, but im happy it was stopped because Silva needs to learn that not every guy hes fighting is some bottom feeder that he can just run over, vs some guys you have to be measured and stick to a game plan.

Lets just be completely honest and non bias folks, Silva was whooping Lopes ass on the feet, before that elbow by Lopez, it was looking reeeeaaaaall shaky for Lopes, dude was eating big shots and a lot of them. All Silva had to do was chill on the feet and do what he was doing, instead he started showing 0 respect to Lopes, running around with his hands down, and ate an elbow. Props to Lopes, im honestly a bit shocked every time he wins because of how he fights, he looks like Chris Leben combined with Korean Zombie with Damian Maia's bjj all in one. His striking is super slow and sloppy, but hes creative with it and it somehow works, until he runs into someone who fights smart and sticks to their gameplan (like Volk).

It was a really fun fight to watch by 2 guys who are for sure fan favorites so its a W no matter who won, but both guys need to work on their game if they want to be champions, eating shots all fight and hoping for some spinning shit will only take you so far, and on the other side doing your best impressions of Conor McGregor just without the accolades will probably keep you closer to the gate keeper/fan favorite role than a championship belt.
Excellent post. Just wanted to say it.

Under most circumstances, I would say the stoppage was correct.
However, you always have to look at the fighter specifically, when he is taking a beating.
Silva is an animal. He survived the beating in the first round, which was way worse, because of the elbows to the head.
He came back out very strong. Then he gets caught by a spinning elbow that grazed the top of the head and that puts him down.
Lopez jumps on him with a flurry of hammer strikes and just as Silva is starting to make a move to the side, with a possible recoup and escape, the fight is stopped.
He was not out and has the capacity to take punishment. I would have let it go longer.
Not saying that the stoppage was premature but I am looking at the individual fighter that is capable of continuing.
I understand why he was upset.
The only reason he was still up was because he was hanging off the fence. We had a similar fight recently where it was stopped as the guy got up off a fence grab.

Silva was hanging off the fence, got dropped and then basically presented the back of head to be finished. He was dropped from the elbow, dropped again on the ground and blood was going everywhere. That's what a TKO finish should be. Sure he might survive, but he has taken so much damage at that point you can argue the fight should be stopped.

Yeah, when you consider that he was taking a ton of unanswered shots while also grabbing the cage, yeah stop it. If you stop it to penalize him for grabbing the cage you're basically letting him off the hook.

Pretty much. He got absolutely dominated on the mat but that was also largely because he got taken down trying to throw flashy spinning stuff. He was really taking control of the striking and looked to have Lopes in trouble but he got cocky and threw caution to the wind against a very dangerous opponent and paid for it.

The problem I have is that a lot of the refs are incompetent. Beltran usually lets fights go longer.
Earlier on, this one ref completely ignored an illegal knee to the head, which definitely influenced the fight.
In Contender, a ref gives a late warning to a guy that eye poked his opponent twice. No point deduction.
These refs are not given strict guidelines, so each is free to make his call. Something should be done about that.
Marglidoufus is the worst ref of all time.

Oh my god dude I just wrote another multi paragraph essay only for my browser to refresh when I was almost fucking done.
Basically I compared this fight to Brock vs Carwin and how the heavyweight fight should have been stopped due to like 40 unanswered gnp shots but Brock wasn’t still moving, at least Silva was trying to stand up and stop Diego’s advance.
I prefer my KO’s to be a bit more definitive and with less consciousness for the loser

He'd already taken alot of damage in the mount where the ref gave him some serious leeway
