I think the extreme weight cut hampers his cardio at 170. A soft puncher like Jackson was able to rock him. I think his chin holds up much better at 185 without the taxing cut.
Further, WW is filled with wrestlers with excellent top control like Colby, Woodley and Usman which I think is the perfect style to beat him. If he goes up to MW, I see him and his submission skills giving problems to a lot of top 10 fighters. The standing guillotine he snatched on Jackson was slick, and he would have had it had it not been for his depleted cardio at the weight class.
His sick Jitz can give a lot of fighters at MW a run for their money.
IMO, he is the perfect replacement against Jacare, as Romero has dropped out. If that fight goes to the ground, it is a grappling fan's wet dream. I feel like he can secure a kimura from side control on Jacare if he plays his cards right, or cruise to a comfortable 30-26 through positional control. If the jitz cancels out, I see a plodding striking battle, but I have Punk by KO as his knees are vicious, and Jacare has been knocked out in the past. It would suck for me if this fight is made as I am a huge Jacare fan and I hope to see him getting a title shot before he retires, but this is just too good of a stylistic matchup to pass on!
How do you feel Punk does against the elite at MW? I feel he loses to Bobby Knuckles in a close decision, but he can pretty much have his way on the ground against the rest.
With the right matchups, we could be looking at a new young and exciting contender at MW!
