ArtemV is back from outer space! Last time, he brought us horror, this time, he brings us the future! Artem has decided to nominate his favorite modern sci-fi movies (for some unknowable reason this doesn't include Jupiter Ascending) and... wait a minute... these are all Bullitt68's favourite modern sci-fi movies! Goddamnit people what have I said about taking bribes!

Candidates:

Interstellar

Director: Christopher Nolan

Stars: Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain

Premise: A team of explorers travel through a wormhole in space in an attempt to ensure humanity's survival.

The Martian

Director: Ridley Scott

Stars: Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig

Premise: An astronaut becomes stranded on Mars after his team assume him dead, and must rely on his ingenuity to find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive.

Inception

Director: Christopher Nolan

Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page

Premise: A thief who steals corporate secrets through the use of dream-sharing technology is given the inverse task of planting an idea into the mind of a CEO.

Looper

Director: Rian Johnson

Stars: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt

Premise: In 2074, when the mob wants to get rid of someone, the target is sent into the past, where a hired gun awaits - someone like Joe - who one day learns the mob wants to 'close the loop' by sending back Joe's future self for assassination.

Alright, @europe1

I back for this one

Interstellar was one of my favorite movies of the last decade. The rest of the choices are great sci-fis.

Thanks, @ArtemV great choices.

Don't you love me acting like I've actually participated before?

I've watched all of these within the last two years, so I'm going to flip a coin between two.

Yea, I've also seen them all. 2 of them in the last year. Good films.

I have several SIGNIFICANT biases that determined my pick for this one. Plus, IIRC, it's been up in a poll once before while I've been a member and I didn't vote for it then; if the movie gods have seen fit to put it before me a second time, who am I to vote against it twice?

In @ArtemV's defense, he drew a hard bargain and forced The Martian on me. I would've much preferred something like the super underrated In Time to round out the cool new sci-fi movie list. But Jeff Daniels' presence made it a bit easier to concede :D

As for the Top Theme, I'd struggle with doing a top 10 (because by the time I'd get to the end of the list I'd be dealing with movies that I don't consider to be legitimately great action movies) but I can for sure do a top 5:

1) Logan - Better than all of the Marvel movies. It's the GOAT non-Nolan superhero movie.

2) Edge of Tomorrow - Not a perfect movie, but it's a seriously fucking awesome movie nonetheless.

3) Captain America: The Winter Soldier - One of the very best Marvel movies and BY FAR the best Captain America movie.

4) Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation - Not as good as 3 or 4, but still a fantastic continuation of the revitalized franchise.

5) Jason Bourne - I was so scared when I heard that Matt Damon was coming back to do another Bourne movie. I consider the original trilogy a perfect story unit like Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy and I love the character and the original films so much that I was terrified that this would suck and ruin everything, but credit to the team, they put together a great movie that actually had me by the end looking forward to what was next for Bourne.

Honorable Mention: I Am Wrath is the non-retarded bad ass actioner that John Wick wishes it was. Fuck that stupid dog movie. I Am Wrath is the 21st Century Rolling Thunder with John Travolta and my man Christopher Meloni raising serious hell

4. Deadpool
3. Edge of Tomorrow
2. Winter Soldier
1. Logan

Haven't really seen any other recent action movies I liked that much. I haven't watched a lot of recent releases in general. I considered Hacksaw Ridge, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and Hell or High Water, those have action-y elements but I don't know if they qualify. Even Deadpool is more of a comedy really.

I had a tough time picking, I haven't saw any of them in many months especially x. I am happy with either film winning, but secretly hoping that probably the most lesser known gets picked.

1) John Wick
2) Deadpool
3) Godzilla ((2019) please be good...)
4) John Wick 2
5) Thor: Ragnarok

This one was good, if you like to see lots of slashing. And John Wick ruled. After that I'm drawing a blank.

Hmm. I've seen them all, this is a first... IIRC.

I feel like we watched Looper in the club already, but I must be wrong.

There's one I really don't want to see win.

I'm falling behind here, skipping ready player one. Still going to watch Abbott and Costello and read the thread. I'll try and watch Leviathan tomorrow night.

This Weeks Top Theme is "Top 5 best Action Movies of the Last 5 Years"

Damn this is a week I can get behind. I've seen 3 of 4 of these movies and the fourth I really really want to see. One of the three I've seen I own and it's one of my favorite movies, one I really liked but not quite that highly, and one I frankly just don't remember but know it was praised. Great week I'll watch any of em honestly.

Best Action Movies Released in the Last 5 years:

1) Logan
2) The Raid 2
3) Captain America: Winter Soldier
4) John Wick
5) Edge of Tomorrow

HM: The Night Comes For Us, Mad Max: Fury Road, Baby Driver, Kingsman: The Secret Service, The Nice Guys
DM: Ready Player One, but we all know that by now based on my write-up.

I don't really watch serious action movies anymore.

1) Kung Fury (on top of all the laughs the martial arts sequences are totally bad-ass too)
2) Journey to the West (The third part of the movie kind of sucks, unless you're Chinese or know the full story of the monkey king. But the first part has one of my favorite action sequences of all time, 20 straight minutes of edge-of-your-seat action, with serious laughs mixed-in. The second part features some great action sequences too)
3) Machete Kills (okay, I liked it more for the laughs but there's a ton of action too, silly but fun action)
4) Shaolin (the story was cliché but the action was top-notch, and why else watch a modern Hong Kong kung-fu movie?)
5) Skiptrace (Jackie choregraphing with Knoxville doing the stunts, talk about a winning combo. I had low expectations for it but ended up really enjoying it)

HM:
- Game Night (silly story but the action was surprisingly well done, and I was entertained throughout)
- The Nice Guys (I liked it a lot, but the action sequences weren't anything amazing... yes yes, that applies to Machete Kills too but I love that movie. I can watch it over and over)
- Dunkirk (Expected a lot more, but it was still very entertaining and some of the sequences were really wild to see in movie format)
- Grimsby (The immature side of me loved the hell out of that movie, definitely more of a comedy than action though)
- The World's End (Silly but funny story, the fight scenes are really good too)
- Train to Busan (cliché but very well done, even managed to get me (somewhat) emotionally invested)
- Spy (funny stuff)

two movies I do not like at all because I’m a stuffy cunt & two I have been avoiding because I’m a stuffy cunt... until a good friend gave a hard recommendation for one of the latter, so I voted for that one since I trust his judgment.

the top 5 in no particular order:
Mad Max: Fury Road
The Assassin
John Wick
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Hardcore Henry

I really need to give Logan another go because it did not resonate w/ me at all when I saw it in theaters. might’ve been a bad day or something

Or maybe it didn't resonate because, and I know I'm going out on a limb here, but...

normally I’d agree w/ your hypothesis, but these gosh darn superhero movies have a knack for tickling my g-spot in a way I never thought possible.

the first two X-Men movies might be in my top ten most-watched because I looped those dvds like they were about to go extinct when I was a young lad. Patrick Stewart is also space daddy. I was probably on my movie period or something when I watched Logan because it has every reason to be my jam.

speaking of superhero movies, if Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse counts as an action movie, it would definitely make my top five of the last five years

I've seen and enjoyed them all. Have two in particular I would like to rewatch and one I really would rather not rewatch. Sadly, it is the one in the lead! Guess we will see what happens.

I'm the opposite, I've never liked any of the Fox-Men movies very much, but Logan is my favorite superhero movie, perhaps because it's very antithetical to its own franchise in many ways.

I've watched all of these within the last two years, so I'm going to flip a coin between two.

Yeah the same, my choice ended up really being down to the one that had been discussed the least already on these boards.

Not sure exactly where the boundaries for action film would be but I just went for blockbuster type films that had some action in them.

1.Fury Road
2.Rogue One
3.Logan
4.The Winter Solider
5.Guardians of the Galaxy

2) Journey to the West (The third part of the movie kind of sucks, unless you're Chinese or know the full story of the monkey king. This is the Stephen Chow movie? I’ve been meaning to see it.
