ive been shadow boxing with weights (5kg dumbbells) for about 3 rounds after class, because i believe it increses speed and power, although i could be wrong?. today my joints in my arms are KILLING me for the first time since i started.. is what im doing damaging to my arms? and are there any real benefits???

5kgs? Shadowboxing with weight is great, but you're going too heavy.

you should be using 1-2 lbs weights while keeping your hands up at all times. get those small dumbbells like what the old women you see walking around the neighborhood while swinging there arms like it helps them some way use

Buakaw uses 5kg for uppercuts and hooks, 2ibs for straights.

I don't use any weights when shadow boxing (personal preference).
If you are going to use weights, keep them very light and keep your punches short (don't over extend).

Yes you are doing it right, What you want to do is 4 rounds!!
Round 1 5KG Hooks and Uppercuts
Round 2 3KG Hooks and Uppercuts
Round 3 1KG Incorporate straight punches now too!
Round 4 No Weights just shadowboxing!

Note: Dont over extend your straight punches but really exagerate the hooks and uppercuts!!

Use anything less than 30 lbs and your a wuss. Be sure to use try this in a live sparring session too for practical use.

Just kidding, don't do that.

I use weights while shadow boxing for warm up prior to a training session.

Typically use the 3lb dumbell. I have used 5lb but only on short range stricking (hooks, uppercut, elbow, very slowly)

I only do it for 2 mins
