i admit im rather new to the ground game (this is my third week of classes) so i dont quite kow what im talking about here...so no flames please......:-D

i go to class 4 times a week, but i would like to be able to do something between classes on my own to help my game. i have heard of shadow grappling, does anyone have any experience with this? is it a helpful as it is with striking? any tips on how to correctly do it?

are there any drills that can be done solo at home in a place where space isnt a problem?

you can shrimp i guess... but shadow grappling is pretty lame and more or less not useful, you'd be better off just mentally going over techniques.

disagree, shadow grapplng will help your game if you are consistent with it

I've shadow wrestled before but never tried to shadow grapple (assuming bjj/ sub wrestling).

You could practice sprawling if you were so inclined to, but if space is an issue you might have to do it stationary.

You could practice shrimping as Hayliks has already suggested.

Don't have much more to tell you but for me the key to drilling by myself is visualizing what I am doing with perfect form, speed, and power. Something to consider if you decide to try it out.

Some techniques and such I've come to understand through just thinking about them for a while at home.. I dunno about rolling around on the floor with yourself though.

idk... try pulling guard by yourself a couple times maybe

imo at home i just like to focus my time on watching videos or reading

lol shadow grappling? I can imagine somebody just rolling around on the floor by himself and screaming in pain and tapping when his arm is extended.

My 2 year old nephew has an invisible friend....I roll with him sometimes, he does a serious rear naked choke

so you get knocked down when you shadowbox?

Shadow grappling no. You can probably practice "shooting in" and doing hip 'scapes.

Shrimping, stretching,,, not much else... doesnt really work because alot of the guard game your feet need to be controlling the hips so you need something to plant your feet on...unless you buy one of those grappling dummys.... i prefer to ask a brother or friend to drill some stuff.

when i dont have anyone to practice with i usually go on the internet and watch videos or read about moves. visualizing is the next best thing you can do when you dont have a partner and it does help, just disect a certain technique or postion and try to think of what your doing wrong or how you can make it better.

otherwise make friends with other members of your dojo and train outside of class.

I shadow grapple with a 70 pound heavy bag with a judo belt tied around it for "arms." It's of some value, I think. It's not bad for practicing big movements (triangle and arm bar from guard, shrimping with weight on you) or going over series (side mount to N/S, to far side arm bar, to near side arm bar, to mount, to far side arm guillotine or kimura). It's also not bad to practice shots on if you stand it up. But you're clearly only getting drillwork for the BASICS of a move.

i take my heavy bag down and put it between my legs. i then practice throwing armbars from both sides without touch this bag with my hands. its a good ab workout and good for armbar practice.

Some naive people in here!

If i've just come back from practice i'll often work through a move that we covered on my own. Helps me to drill it into my head.

Obviously you can't do it with all moves but just mimicking the movements and patterns is a great training aid for me.

There are all sorts of solo grappling drill to develop good hip movement (shrimping, wall walking, various rolls, etc) that are sort of like shadow grappling although they are not directly equivalent to the shadowboxing. Additionally, working with a stability ball to develop continous pressure, balance, and fluid transitional movements has been beneficial to my top game (there is a video somewhere from one of the SBGI instructionals showing guys working with a stability ball).

I'm also new about 4 weeks of bjj but you could shrimp, shoot up triangles, practice things. Like in class before we learn Judo throws we just practice by ourselves the moves to make sure we all got the "form" right. But watching videos is also great while your at home.
