It's hard for me to believe that he will pose a threat to Shogun unless he has improved by leaps and bounds. Hamill landed a number of good shots and bloodied him up a little bit. I gotta think that if Shogun is able to land shots that easily on Gustafsson, it will prove to be disastrous for the Mauler.

Also, while I realize that Hamill is not an easy guy to finish, Gustafsson didn't seem to have a lot of power in his shots. He did have great footwork, however, and that might help him stay out of the clinch with Shogun. I think that's where Shogun wants this fight to be, but who knows.

Basically, I'm saying that if Shogun can land shots as easily as Hamill was able to, it could be a short night for The Mauler.

Well, shogun didn't really set the world on fire against Vera either, so Gus has a good chance

He was less hitable in the Thiago Silva fight. Nothing really new just a lot of improvements. The Hammil fight was basically the turning point between the old Gustaffson and the new Dominic Cruz-esque Gustaffson.

Also, Hamil mostly struck him with long, pole-arm jabs if I recall. Not excacly the kind of punches that creates a lot of damage (except for superficial one I suppose) so them going through his guard is not as alarming to him as big power-shots which he teoretically would have done a lot more to defend against.

Gustaffson has shown a lot of power outside the Hamil fight. ex: Diabate, Hamman, Te-Huna.

Gust will still prove a formidable opponent for Shogun. His size and power will be a issue for shogun.

Watch 2:30 and onwards for spinning kicks. He also tosses a dude with pink gloves who looks like Phil Davis.

I'd say "quite a lot".

On his feet Shogun is less dangerous IMO than Cyrille Diabate so I don't think that Shogun is going to overwhelm Gus. I think this fight could go a little like the Diabate fight with Gus getting a take down as a result of strikes and then a submission. I am aware that Diabate was beaten badly by Shogun in Pride, but I feel Shogun is not the same guy from his Pride days.

An objective opinion here;

Two fighters, one is still evolving and we do not yet know his ceiling....

The other is maybe going to improve from his last fight with the same skill set, or possibly feeling the effects of age and 30+ fights....

toss up

I would say he improved quite a bit. I was kind of thinking the way you were leading up to his fight with Matyushenko and was expecting that to be a bit of trading on the feet, but he got rid of Matyushenko easily. Then he did well against Thiago Silva. I'm not actually convinced he'd run through Shogun, but I think he's rightfully favored in this fight. I'm actually rooting for Shogun, but I don't really mind who wins. I just hope it ends in devastating fashion to show who looks to be a potential next contender.

I think the hype is warranted, the thing I am worried about is nerves. Huge fight for him, and he is quite young.

Probably a good deal. I mean, that was almost a year and a half ago. Every part of his game is probably better in some way.

When you will learn that it's one thing a training and sparing and completely diferent it's a real fight.

G has nothing for Shogun he will be destroyed.

Thanks for not flaming me guys. I've missed most of Gustafsson's recent fights, so I'm glad my fellow sherdoggers were able to fill in the blanks for me.

Maybe he will, maybe he wont.

The point of the clip though was to show a high level striking technique done with more than impressive fluency and speed. The way he throws them he looks like Jon Jones (maybe even more fast and fluent) and that was not the case in similar vids previously to the Silva fight where he first started using them (he even threw one in the fight that looked hilariously awkward). And how it looked ahead of the Hamill fight.......... he's come a long, long way since then. When he went up against Hamill it was literally the first fight we saw him use head kicks and proper distance/movement and for each fight since then he's stepped into the cage a better and more polished version. It's been about 1500 hours of training and who knows how many reps at each single technique since the Hamill fight, mind you.

It's never a sure thing re which version of a fighter "shows up." I'm excited to see this fight. I like both fighters and just hope it's entertaining which I do believe it will be.

This. Cant get much more on point than this.

Not to mention the quick work he made of The Janitor.

Yes. But that was more timing, precision and Vladimir's own defects than what we mean with traditional, KO-power.

"Defect" there was running pretty much straight into that punch, and sadly it's not something that Shogun certainly won't do these days....
