From my 4 to 13 year, I did Karate. When I got in fights, I basically threw a lot of straight punches at the head of the other kids and won the fights.

In my 20's I did Boxing and Kickboxing. I did not get in street fights, but I felt really strong. I remember I was in college. I went to the classroom and felt I could beat up everybody in the room. I do not know if that is true but that is how I felt.

In the beginning of my 30's I did BJJ and felt weak. I thought if I get in a street fight what should I do. Lying on my back. Put the other person in a submission, but they can then I attack me again when I release them.

Last years I do fitness and I feel strong.

In my opinion the best self-defense sport that I have done is Boxing and Kickboxing. The worst self-defense sport that I have done is BJJ. I seriously think fitness is better for self-defense than BJJ.

A couple a months ago I saw a YouTube video with Firas Zahabi. A BJJ black belt student told him that he almost got in a street fight and was sacred to fight. Firas told him as a BJJ black belt you should not be afraid of street fight. But I understand it. I think even the strong guys at a fitness gym feel more confident in street fight than BJJ people.

Your nearest boxing gym should offer a boxercise class.

Boxercise being fitness circuits & boxing training.

This isn't surprising.

When you train BJJ at a good gym, you will get destroyed on a regular basis. You should be afraid of getting in a street fight, because you never know how good the other guy is.

That is the benefit of BJJ. It teaches you humility, and does not inflate your ego.

The average person is out of shape and does not know how to punch. As long as you have decent fitness level and a basic understanding of boxing and grappling, most will be fine. Are there people out there that can still kick their ass? Of course, but the good thing is that most that are trained aren't looking for a fight.

BJJ is fantastic for self defense if you have an instructor who teaches and understands it’s more that just a mcdojo sport. It’s not your first line of defense, but it may be your last. It’s for if a bigger stronger guy, or a guy who sucker punches you, or if he is a good wrestler, or if you trip or end of falling.

You never know when the other guy will end up above you with your back on the ground. It will be a life saver to know how defend from your back, possibly submit him, or even better, sweep him so he is on his back and up us are standing above him. It’s even great if you are outnumbered and you just have to scramble to escape. Scramble out from under 2 regular guys is way easier than scrambling out from under even just a purple belt.

And boxing plus Muay Thai is the way to go for self defense imo. Tons of guy will try to grab and wrestle with you in the clench or ugly takedowns the second you really hurt them with punches. Sambo and/or Judo is great, and obviously wrestling is great as well.

You can train in any martial art and still suck at "fighting". Self awareness, commons sense, and ability to avoid a fight are as important as ability to throw a punch or secure a takedown or a submission.

The first time that I engaged in Randori in Judo I was a White belt rolling with adults ranked under Brown belt. We engaged from a kneeling position.

A Blue belt attempted a Name juji jime front choke. I grabbed my own lapel, posted my elbow against the inside of one of his forearms, and defeated the choke. His pulling my lapel inward with one hand pushed his other hand away. Anyone with common sense could have figured that out.

True

But usually if you are there already you are about to lose.

Soccer kick incoming
A fight won’t end with 1 soccer kick. I got my face stomped by a guy with 40lbs on me in high school. He only did it once and I had him on his back with me on top. Damn near broke my orbital and I looked like Rocky post Apollo fights. If I had no idea what to do it would have been bad because the likely wasn’t going to stop until I was out or he was happy.

Usually its one on.guy on top of you

His friend coming to kick you

but in the end its just my experience

Overall this whole street fight stuff is ridiculous because situations vary so much.

Boxing plus Freestyle wrestling is best

Anything ground related is horrible, every bouncer will tell you this

Btw who cares beyond age of 25

It's not that ground related training is horrible, its that you don't want to end up on the ground in a street fight. But if you do end up there, it's better to know what the hell you're doing, than not. I'd say that more than 95% of the population would have no idea what to do if an altercation was to hit the ground. That would give anyone with ground related training a huge advantage there.

And yes over the age of late teens or early 20s, if you're involved in this type of garbage outside of a sanctioned MMA/boxing/kickboxing environment, you've gone down the wrong path in life.

They do. I have been in a number of them, every situation was very different. But none ended with me on my back, even the ones I got my ass kicked in, and that doesn’t mean I wasn’t on my back at some point. I’m not a hardass tough guy either, I’m just a sarcastic smartass who says the wrong stuff to some of the wrong people lol. And I have a habit of calling people on their bullshit when they act tough and think I’ll just take their shit. I know it sounds wanna be tough guy, but many of these cases were when I was in the marines and it was other marines. And high school.

Haven’t been in a fight in over a decade now, although i could have been, now I know how to talk them down without looking like I’m just letting them bully me.
