Hey guys,

I currently take Muay Thai but my gym SUCKS (poorest of poor teaching). I was trying to find another place in Toronto, Ontario (Canada) but I couldn't..then Salvosa BJJ (formerly Rebellion BJJ in its old location) opened up on July 1st and they offer Muay Thai and BJJ. I was wondering if anyone heard anything about the teacher (OMAR SALVOSA) or about the gym. I really need good teaching, I don't want to sign up at a place and learn it sucks..again. It's $140 CAD a month and I'm 16, that's a fortune for me but if the place teaches you then to me, it's worth it.

Here's the site: http://salvosabjj.com/home.html

Here's a clip of the teachers bio:
--------------------------------
Omar is known as one of Ontario

i'm guessing you're at Ultimate right now. They're not that bad, Kru paul is a great guy and a great teacher.

Salvosa BJJ Ascension is a great Jiu Jitsu gym. (My current gym) Omar heads the BJJ program and PETER ARCALAS heads the Muay Thai program. As far as i know (as i do mosty BJJ) Peter is a top Am Muay Thai fighter in Ontario, we also have other fighter working at the gym like CAMTAO Lightweight Champion, Mohammed “Hoost” Awad.

A super friendly atmosphere and a bunch of great guys to work with day in and day out. If you want to drop by, do so and try it out. Plus it's only like 5 minutes from Ultimate.

As long as you're not a dick, i hope to see you.

Yeh, I'm at Ultimate. I havn't learned from Kru Paul yet because I've only been going for about a month or two (I'm holding off on my white untill the end of summer..at least. I want to get my basics down more). The beginner teachers suck, though. I'm curious as to Kru Paul's teaching methods/quality however.

As for Salvosa BJJ..do they really break down the moves and teach you the basics (PROPERLY)? How personal is the training? And how long have you been going for?

Yeh, it's right on Progress - I actually went there first day..saw the price..and walked out. It's a lot of money..so that's what's getting at me right now (Have to save the funds..agh -_-).

I called them twice today - second time someone answered, put me on hold for 15 min and never came back LOL. I'll call again and find out if they would mind me joining in on a BJJ as well as Muay Thai class to get the feel of it, first. Maybe if I pay for the year upfront they'll offer a discount, as well. Most gyms tend to do that from my experience. *Let's hope!*

Thanks for the response though, I'm definately planning on checking it out..hopefully this week.

Actually Pete just got his Kru rank, so he is a fully qualified trainer on par with Kru Paul. I believe he has 6-8 years of thai experience and is competitivly active. Omar is a great teacher, and the begginer classes will give you all the base you need (mondays and fridays although you can come out anytime, and the other classes are just as usefull for begginers). And unlike most other gyms, there is a HUGE amount of time devoted to open mat, which will really accelerate your game. Dont mean to be giving so many shameless plugs to Ascension (rebellions new name), but as you might have been able to tell i train there, and highly recommend it. You can come and try for a week free and see how you like it!

WOW - you can try a WEEK free????? That's amazing, wicked, I'll definately do that. That will give me a chance to try BJJ, Muay Thai, Wrestling Takedowns, and Open-Mat :D I'll try and start this Sat!

I e-mailed Omar and he got back to me..if I pay 6 months upfront I get a 10% discount..year upfront I get 20% discount.. That would help $-wise, now all I need is to get ahold of some money -_-;

Pete? - Never heard of him lol!

As for grappling at UMA, they only have 2 MMA classes a week and they're both beginner - there's no intermediate/advance, etc. I hear the classes are good but curious as to what they do after basics :icon_lol: (not a question : p)

Anyways, maybe I'll see you guys there - I'll be the tall white kid in white Sprawls LOL.

Thanks for responses.

There is intermediate/advance at UMA, it's just called team training. You just need to get your white first.

Kru Paul is a great stand up trainer, and once you get your white, you can start training with him. He trained a lot of MMA guys, Gary Goodridge, Mark Coleman, Kevin Randalman, The big Cat. So he knows MMA really well.

If you want to fight MMA, stick around UMA atleast untill you start training with Team Ultimate (Team Go Riki) because i don't want you to write UMA off before the real training starts.

But as a member of Ascension, i hope you'll come down and try it out for a week. We would love to have you. In house black belt, tons of open mat time, friendly atmosphere, what else can you ask for, it's the perfect place to learn and grow as a fighter!

Thanks monkey for all your help, really appreciated.

The two beginner classes I took today were pretty good - Dimiter/Dimitri?? was teaching (tall black/brown guy). He's one of the few good beginner teachers, though - most suck (teaching-wise) :\

But hey, thanks for your honesty, I guess I'll stick with UMA and make a decision once I go to team training. In the mean time, I can save my money for SalvosaBJJ in case I end up going there :)

I'll definately try the free week out, though - once I get the right jock I'll come by haha.

And hey - does the team-training include MMA? I thought that was just Muay Thai sparring o_o if it includes MMA sparring..that would be sick. I've never seen anyone do ground and pound, grappling (outside of MMA begginners), or anything like that in Team Training. I'll ask tomorrow.

Thanks for your help man - invaluable to me. Appreciate it.

Do they still offer the first week for free? that mean I can come to every class right or do they have limits?

When I e-mailed them asking about costs they said feel free to drop in for a free class, they never mentioned an entire week though lol.

i don't know. It was a free week when i'd joined. But i signed up after the first class anyways.

sorry to bring back an older thread, but I was wondering if Salvosa BJJ offers ranking for belts. if you currently go to Salvosa and have msn msg me. Im finding that BJJ is more enjoyable compared to MT and want to put a better focus on my ground skills

^^ AWESOME club that offers BJJ training as well as MMA training.

I'm at Toronto BJJ too. I can say this is an AWESOME AWESOME club. The dudes are really nice here, and the training is great. THe coach Cesar is AWESOME and really friendly, he talks to the students even off the mat. The wrestling coach is a beast and the boxing coach is nice, caring, and also very knowledgeable. The boxing coach is a great teacher. And the Muay Thai coach will work the hell out of you in cardio.

There isn't a bad thing about that club. Another option to consider. :D

Since someone brought this thread back from the dead, I have some updates about our gym:

We are very pleased to announce that due to increasing demand for our classes, we will be moving across the parking lot to our new home at 11 Progress Avenue, Unit# 25.

Remarkably, our club has outgrown its current location within just over a year. The new 4100+ square foot training facility will have two large mat areas, a 20 foot boxing ring, a 20 foot THROWDOWN cage wall and a variety of specialty bags/equipment to enhance our boxing and MMA training.

We are currently in the process of renovating the new space and will officially move from our current location at the end of this month.

Congratulations to all of our team members!!! We appreciate your loyalty, dedication and work ethic as we continue to ASCEND TO NEW HEIGHTS in our training. At TEAM ASCENSION, the quality of our training is always top priority and we are happy to demonstrate our committment to excellence through this big move, which will undoubtedly allow us to augment our collective growth and development as a premiere training squad for years to come.

ONLY POSITIVE VIBES WELCOME AT THIS GYM!!!

LOVE. HONOUR. RESPECT. LOYALTY. HUMILITY. INTEGRITY.

--- SALVOSA BJJ ASCENSION ---

See you all at the new spot!!!

Omar, Beverley, Malik & Zion Salvosa.
