Ukranian MMA fighters have traditionally gotten along well with Russian MMA fighters and many train together and know each others families due to close proximity and close cultural relations.

However lately, Western European and North American based gyms (we'll call them the "North American Training Organization", or "NATO" for short) have really started to expand its collective power and influence in the Eastern European MMA scene by trying to lure Ukrainian fighters to train in its "nato" gym while openly threatening the livelihood of the Russian-based gyms.

This is obviously causing tension, because Russian MMA gyms want Ukrainian MMA gyms to continue training together and there is a lack of understanding as to why they would leave and instead train with the "nato" gyms, which is seen as an act of betrayal because Russian MMA gyms would now be under constant threat from the ensuing hostilities if the "nato" gyms began operating nearby in Ukrainian gyms.

It seems as though these "nato" gyms need to mind their own business and handle its own MMA gyms on its side of the world instead of provoking instability in a region it has no reason to be in while luring the Russian-based MMA gyms into confrontation which would ultimately be a defensive or preemptive strike to protect itself from the increasing and perpetual threat from "nato" gyms.

About 20 years ago some of these "nato" gyms expanded their gym operations into the middle-eastern MMA scene. But other MMA gyms around the world didn't seem to care much at that time regarding the "nato" expansion into unwelcome territories.

Let's continue watching MMA in peace and harmony. Can't we all just get along!

This weekends fight between Bobby and Islam is going to be a real life Rocky IV. Bobby will get smeshed. Gaethje will have a long training montage, which includes de him defeating Charles, then he will KO Islam for his first title defense.

I think Russian/Ukrainian fighters don’t really give a shit about all that political nonsense and that they just wanna trane MMA and compete

Seriously?

This is not just some “political nonsense”. This is the biggest land war in Europe since WWII, which is how that tragedy started.

Watch some youtube videos on utterly terrified regular Ukrainian citizens or unprecedented levels of protests in the streets of Russia by its citizens. Regular people in Europe as a whole care about this very deeply, man, because no one knows what’s coming next.

Seems like Russian mma gyms are governed by an aging authoritarian leader who wants to make an imprint on the world stage before it’s too late to satisfy his misguided nationalistic impulses. Seems like those before him have tried similar things and russian mma gyms and especially their patrons have paid dearly. That’s what seems to be going on here.

Then the Ukrainian fighters should not be pledging allegiance to the north american based MMA gyms. Why turn your back on your Russian brothers and MMA fighters when it would end up leaving them vulnerable?

It's kind of murky. There are actually quite a few fighters like Fedor and Oleinik who were born in the Ukrainian SSR but identify as Russian.

Oleinik actually got banned from entering Ukraine for his fervent support of Putin.

but this "imprint" seems to not be a case of nationalism or pride, but instead seems to be an act to protect itself and its future from north american based MMA gyms who are rapidly encroaching on its territory.

At this point, any fighter that supports Russia leadership (publicly) is as bad as anyone that supports Chinese leadership.

Because they want to do whatever they want and the Russian "Brothers" are holding them back. Also those Russian based Gyms have poor facilities, would rather promote their own guys and take a big cut of their income.
