Well in short there was this guy Marc Dutroux who was a dangerous , kidnapping girls and keeping them locked up in his basement where they were sexually abused by him and his friends.

When he was caught, more and more evidence built up that he was part of wider ring that involved very powerful businessmen and government officials, and is speculated could have even gone up to the Belgian Royal Family. Dutroux was acquiring girls for this ring to sexually abuse and even kill

What followed was an incredibly inept attempted coverup in which many witnesses were killed/vanished, and the justice system had to operate with open corruption in trying to sweep it all under the rug. This led to huge public outrage in Belgium and anger towards the government. Dutroux himself said he was working for a powerful organization and there were serious shenanigans at play to protect the major players

I just rewatched EWS a couple of weeks ago for the first time in over a decade. It just seems quaint these days. What are these elites, who were all wearing masks anyway, so concerned about?

Some guy saw them having a very PG sex party where everything seemed consensual and he didn't come away with any evidence of anything.
