Some years back these guys had a friendly roll in London at the Budokwai. Apparently neither knew who the other was at the time. Now as most people on here probably know, this roll has become somewhat of an internet legend, shrouded in mystery, where the people who were there and claimed to have seen it would not divulge any details at all for fear of breaking the unspoken training code. However, still, this is the Internet (you can find most things) and I have always wondered the specific details of exactly how this friendly little roll went. Sadly Ive still been unable to find many solid details. It's 2016 now and would be nice to know. Are there any further leaked details?

Dont know the storu you are talking about. Can you elaborate?

Well, that is the story. Basically some years back (not sure if he still does) Roger was training a lot at the Budokwai in London, which is the oldest Judo club in Europe. Lots of high level Judoka come through there on any given day. I've heard that Ray Stevens (Olympic Silver Medalist) , who is one of the head Judo instructors there, who is also Rogers Judo teacher and a BJJ BB under Roger sorta set it up and stirred them in the direction where they would end up rolling together. Apparently Neither Roger nor Kenzo knew who the other was. Apparently Stevens wanted to see the the fireworks like the rest of us.

If it's under judo ruleset, Nakamura would've outclassed Roger.

Yes, but I'm looking for specifics about an actual roll that happened between them at the Budokwaik about 10 plus years ago in London. This actually happened.

if they trained standup roger probably got tossed on his ass a bunch of times

if they hit the ground, roger probably cross choked him.

It was a ground newaza session. Lasted about 10 minutes according to sources who were there. Some sources I've read said that Kenzo didn't get destroyed, others were less clear. The whole thing is very murky. Some imply otherwise. It's very hard to find details of the specifics.

Sorry for my necroposting, but I remember that, around 2010, Kosei Inoue spent almost a year teaching in the Budokwai and he sparred with Roger Gracie.

Wow, didn't know that. Would love to have seen that roll. Although, I think Nakamura would have been more interesting as hes know for his newaza to a higher degree.

Do you know more details about this?

I read this over at the Underground and SFUK ten years ago. Apparently Roger had many friendly back and forth newaza rolls with this high level Japanese Judo BB teaching at Budokwai. I heard it was mostly even usually ending in a draw.

Do you know more details about this?
I read it on the old judoforum (now closed) around 2010.
I remember they said it wasn't just a rolling, but a sparring both in tachiwaza and newaza.

Hmm that's interesting. I didn't know about that one, but I had heard about the one with Nakamura for years. But nobody ever seems to know specific details about either one of these. I read about Nakamura and Roger's sparring session first on the Judo forum years ago. Then I think I seen it on the underground forums some time after that. There was even a guy on there who said he was there but wouldn't give any details because its training. Lol

In the end of 2012, Roger Gracie met again Kosei Inoue and Ray Stevens.
Roger and Inoue are almost same age, same experience and same weight.

Just a question: Roger Gracie is one of the best stylist in ground fighting. Why doesn't he have cauliflower ears?

He has cauliflower on both ears. However I've found that people with big ears dont get it to the same noticeable degree as people with smaller ears. Roger's got some whoppers on him.

Another factor is style. Some people will always be more prone to ear destruction because of their style. Roger's not really a grinder, or gets caught in too many tight chokes that he has to rip his head out of.
