Figured I'd see if anyone here has trained in Rochester, New York. Looking for a good BJJ and/or Judo school. Note: Asking before I go to each place I can google to try them out. Just wanted to see if anyone had any initial thoughts before I see if they're a good fit for me.

Quick Google for Instructors up here:

Eric Cady, black belt under Roy Harris (Nova BJJ)
Chris Herzog, black belt under Eddie Bravo (Empire MMA)
John Farrar Sr., brown belt under Paulo Wesley Lopes, third degree black belt Judo (Bedroc MMA)

There's also Fusion MMA, and they say they teach BJJ and Judo, but I can't figure out who teaches it and who they're under.

Any thoughts are appreciative.

Check out Synthesis BJJ:

My students Collin, Jason, and Casey are there running things, and they have legitimate jiu jitsu with a very laid back, fun atmosphere. Collin is a very legit brown belt in BJJ (has been a brown belt for over 2 years now), and the club offers extremely high level wrestling as well.

Oh hey! Andrew Smith right? I'll definitely add them to the list. Do you ever come up to teach seminars?

Sure do! I'm currently scheduled to come up September 6th, in fact.

These guys really love jiu jitsu. Collin has actually been a brown belt for about 5 years, actually. They are on BJJ Revolution Team now and officially under me nowadays, although I've had a relationship with these guys for several years now.

There are some great people up there, but the 9th planet guys were very hit-or-miss.

There were some that I rolled with that were great, and some that had some big gaps. I know this isn't true for many 9th planet gyms, but there was a clear lack of exposure to certain techniques that are very common at most schools.

I think you mixed up the order.
Eric teaches at Nova BJJ while Chris teaches at Empire/10th planet.

Anyway, where are you going to be at? Some locations are going to be closer to where you might be, and that may be more conveinent for you.

Just saw that. I'll be living in Fairport. It's a suburb southeast of Rochester.

I live in Buffalo and have trained at Kin Tora, who has regular judo tournaments. From these, I'm familiar with Bedroc, Empire and Bushido Kai.

Bedroc and Empire are MMA schools and your tuition will reflect this. Bushido Kai is more of a club with lower tuition.

Everyone I've met from all three were good guys, so I can't imagine going wrong with any of them.

If you're competitive with judo, check out the Am-Can in the spring. It's a good sized local tournament and pretty fun. It used to be huge, but it's been getting smaller over the years.

Appreciate the feedback. I'm not competitive in either. I only have experience rolling with some guys on deployments and army combatives.
