So I was in the market for a couple new gi's for training and after much research I decided to give the JJPG gi a try. I originally wanted the competition version of their gi, but the only gi they had in stock in A2 (I'm 5'10" 195) was the blue ripstop gi. I was hesitant at first because I have a Koral lightweight gi and I don't like it that much. Anyhow, I decided to get it and just use it as a training gi.

INITIAL:

When I picked it up at FedEx, the gi, in the shipping bag, weighed 3.4lbs on FedEx's shipping scales. I was shocked. I was even more shocked when I opened the bag and noticed that this included a gi bag in the weight too. Talk about lightweight! When I took the gi out of the bag I was shocked at how soft the top of the gi was. The ripstop material also felt more sturdy than my Koral gi, and the pants were way better than the Koral lightweight pants. The collar on the gi top felt a little thin, definitely not as good as the Koral gi, but I wasn't too worried about it. The kneepad reinforcements were pretty nice.

FIT:

Out of the bag the gi fit a little different. The skirt was definitely longer than the Koral and the sleeves were a little shorter. I was worried that if the sleeves shrank anymore that the gi would be illegal by ibjjf standards. The top also had good space in the back and chest area. The pants felt a little tight at first but not too bad and the length was good. All in all I was pretty pleased with the gi. I was hoping that I could get the gi to shrink a little but was so worried about the sleeve length that I decided against trying.

SHRINKAGE:

I washed the gi in cold water and then air dried the gi. I will tell you that this gi will shrink even with a cold wash and an air dry. The sleeves shrank slightly and I feel as though it would be iffy to pass a gi checker. If I T rex armed it I would be fine. The skirt also shrank and the whole jacket became much more snug. The pants also shrank a little by to my surprise, the pants felt great. The pants fit snug in the hip/butt area but still left me with plenty of mobility in the legs. These pants fit like a good pair of fight shorts in the waist/hip/butt area.

TRAINING:

I decided to wear this gi to class and the gi looked and felt great. I didn't roll in the gi because I had to bug out of class early, but I really really liked this gi. I have a gameness feather with the ripstop pants and I am not a fan of them, but I love the JJPG gi. I even like the top better than the Koral.

ISSUES:

After training in the gi I brought it home to wash it. Once again I did a cold wash and an air dry. When I pulled the gi out of the wash, I noticed that the seem on the right arm, about mid forearm, was beginning to unravel. The fold on the seam in about a 1 inch section began to start coming loose. This troubled me greatly. I decided to contact JJPG about this. Of all the gi's I have had, I have never had this happen to a gi after 2 washes and one wear to class. I called JJPG and spoke to someone on the phone and was advised to email [email protected] with pictures of the issue and that they would get back to me by the end of the day. I sent the email off and have yet to have a response. Kind of disappointing because I really like this gi and was going to buy another one when they restock. Here are pics of the issue:

Overall, I really like this gi, but I am not sure of the reliability of the product. I have a buddy I train with whose Uncle does alterations and repairs and I am going to see if he can fix it because I have a feeling I won't be hearing from JJPG. Oh well, guess I'll try the Tatami next.

Nice Review! I have this same gi, and I have trained in it for about 4 weeks now, wash it after every class, and I haven't had that problem (yet). Maybe its just a defect in that specific one, but Im sorry that happened and I hope it doesnt happen to me!

Thanks for the review.
I really wanted to test one for a while now however shipping to Europe is just insane.

I'm pretty sure my gi is an exception, not the rule, when it comes to the gi coming unraveled. Hopefully my friends Uncle can do a good job on it and it can still be serviceable. It really is a good gi.

I bought the ripstop pants and I've experienced the same problem. The stitching throughout the pants are very loose and there are a lot of places where various odds and ends are popping out. Also the pants are ripping at the hem of the pants. It's not a result of the seam coming undone, but the material itself is ripping along the seam. It sucks because this is where is it folded over and sewn together so after the the rip gets past the cuff, it will be a RRIIPP up the leg in no time.

I just bought the pants a couple months ago and in a rotation of 4 different gis. I noticed the rip a month ago and I'll wear the pants once in awhile because I'm just bummed about the pants.

Also their dye of the gis are very weird. I mean a buddy bought a black gi and has washed it numerous times and the dye rubs off onto other gis. This had occurred for 2 weeks. And he washed his gi before every practice. My white Adidas gi has a permanent marbling from his black gi and also my other white Korals have been stained as well. I was very annoyed about it.

Sorry, just wanted to get that out there for others to keep in mind when buying JJPG stuff. I don't like complaining, but these are definitely in the realm of "problems" with the gis they are putting out.

I have the gorilla fight gear Hitman gi. My only problem with it has been the cord on the pants came apart in the dryer, but the collar and all the stitching is top notch, I've rolled in it quite a few times.

I haven't had these problems yet, but I won't wear the gi again until I get it fixed. I'm more disappointed that I haven't received a response from JJPG. This was the first thing that I have purchased from them, but I had always heard they had great customer service, so I'm a little shocked. Oh, well.

They usually are. I live 10 min from the place and they are awesome folks. I remember going in to buy a purple belt when I was promoted and the owner of JJPG congratulated me on my accomplishments and just chopped it up abit about jj. I also got to meet Jacare when he first came to America. He was working there believe it or not and signed my Arte Suave DVD and he got my name wrong lol. But it was all good.

Just disappointed in their gear. I don't like to complain about this and that too often because that's for the birds but just disappointed is all. Seeing as JJPG coming out with their line of gis is very new so I dunno, maybe expected their first go at it wouldn't rock solid just yet.

Anyway, good luck man!

Well, I got an email from JJPG today about the gi and it sounds like they going to handle the defective issue. Props to JJPG, and their response is in line with everything else I heard about them as a company with good customer service.

I was going to buy 2 gi (black & blue) to save on shipping to Canada (buy white & navy later), But now reading about the defects, I'll maybe wait until their next generation comes out and hopefully they addressed all the issues! Thanks for all the valuable info. This is why I love sherdog!

Stranger, I just got this gi in the mail today in white. I'm 6'1" and 198 lbs, so I went with the A3. I think the top will shrink to my liking but the pants appear really big (although I haven't tried them on because I'm at work). How much shrinkage do you think i can expect? JJPG says it's pre-shrunk but also says it will shrink up to a size. I'd hate to throw them in the dryer, not get them to shrink enoug on the first go, then be stuck with them. Thanks!

After inquiring with JJPG, I got a quick response that said the rip stop gi is NOT preshrunk and it will shrink 1-2 sizes if dried long enough. I also gave them my measurements and they said the A3 was the best size to order (6' 1", 185-195)

it will shrink a good bit. Heck, mine shrunk washing in cold and hang drying.

Just a follow up: Overall, this is a super light soft gi that served its purpose for a travel gi. The top fit great but the pants are HUGE. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get them to shrink much. I wear the gi on occaision when my other gis are dirty and it's fine for training, the size of the pants though make it akward. I probably should have gone with an A2 despite JJPG's recomendation
