UPDATED AFTER A YEAR OF USE: 19th September 2013

Bought these gloves from Bill Beaulieu on ebay (billboxing15 is his uername there; his email is [email protected]) who some of you may already be familiar with.

A note from Bill:
Dan Mosby and I were good friends for years and I admired greatly his talent as a glove maker "Old School "hair filled training gloves. The California glove. He learned the trade from his uncle RAY FLORES , referee, and San Francisco glove maker. All his gloves were used in the Cow Palace bouts and even those of Sugar "Ray" Robinson and Gene Fullmer, etc. in Uthah.. Both my wife and I learned the art of glove making and other equipment items from Mr.Al Zimmer, the now late and past owner of Spartan Boxing Equipmen, that was once featured monthly in Ring Magazine. Today we have a new line of equipment, made with my specs and sold witht eh motto "More 4 less". we rival both Reyes an Grant in quality materials used and quality workmanship. We're currently on ebay under BEAULIEU boxing equipment. We're featuring 16 oz. training gloves, but can provide anything you need, plus custom gear.

Quality & Craftmanship

My first impressions of the glove were extremely positive. The cowhide leather felt soft and high end with a fairly glossy look and doesn't take long to break in. The double stitching was also excellent and not that far off from what you might expect with higher priced gloves like Reyes and Grant.

Inside the glove the nylon lining is comfortable and seems to breathe fairly well but is quite thin and feels a little cheaper than the rest of materials used. It is durable though and didn't rip at any stage. Beaulieu has since used a thicker, cushier lining.

There were also no inconsistencies between the left and right hand gloves which speaks highly of the craftmanship involved.

Hand Compartment

For my hands these gloves are very comfortable. The hand compartment is more narrow than in some other 16oz gloves, I'd say similar to that of Fairtex's professional boxing gloves (BGL3, BGL7 etc) so if you have fatter hands they may take some time to break in. They will accomodate long fingers fairly easily as well. The thumb placement feels natural and the grip bar is positioned well.

Performance & Protection

These gloves are big, longer even than Cleto Reyes 16oz. They are much more narrow than Reyes and end up being somewhat top heavy as a result. This isn't necessarily a positive or a negative, just something to consider. They are probably better suited to sparring than bagwork because of it. Using them on the bags initially I felt like there was almost a bounce to them when throwing my lead hook and my shoulder was taking too much force over time. I think this was possibly because of their shape slightly changing the angle of contact from what i'm used to with gloves that are less well rounded, and also because of the nature of IMF, and I used them only for sparring with no complaints on my end.

The foam padding is a very thick, more on the soft side and offers great hand protection for sparring purposes and it is very forgiving for your sparring partner.

Over time, "bubbles" will develop in the padding. After a year of use mine had quite a few, and this didn't affect performance, but could have eventually compromised the padding inside. Beaulieu has since begun using a different chemical composition for their IMF, and it remains to be seen if this is still an issue.

The wrist support is pretty poor, being lace-up it's never really going to be terrible, but there are velcro closed gloves which are better. There is quite a lot of padding on the cuff which would help if you were blocking shots there and with the triple cuff and laced properly they provide good-enough support if you wrap up tight. The padding should be stiffer along the wrist as it has too much flexibility. Not a big deal so long as you keep these for sparring, just it's something that can be improved upon though if you have weak wrists it could be a deal breaker.

Summary

These gloves are high quality as you should expect from Bill Boxing and are worth the price if you're looking for good sparring gloves.

These are well made gloves that will withstand professional use and provide a good experience for sparring purposes.

Cons:

Wrist support
Padding not ideal for bagwork/pads
IMF degraded over time

Great review! Is the foam softer than Reyes? Have you tried Conlon 16 oz. lace up? If yes, how do they compare?

BTW, seems Bill listed on ebay several pairs today...

I don't think Bill had to much to do with actually making the gloves, I think they are just a Grant (his favourite glove) clone, with a few tweaks that he had made in Pakistan and slapped his name on.

They look good, but I wouldn't connect these to Dan or Flores gloves.

They're modern foam gloves, never meant to imply they were in any way connected to Flores or that Bill hand made these himself. They were made in Pakistan.

The foam is much thicker in these gloves than Grants and the thumbs are more straight. The density of that foam is different too. The padding along the underside of the wrist has a different cut to Grants as well which dont have that extra padding on the palm. They aren't really Grant clones, although his latest batch of gloves do look like Grants a lot more and I know that he is very fond of that brand.

Off the top of my head I'm going to say they're a little more narrow than Grants as well

robyn1977 is selling similar pairs of gloves, those that Bill is now selling look completely different to my eyes.

I haven't tried Conlon lace-ups. I have had 10oz and 18oz in their standard model of gloves. I think previously you mentioned you have the Gold version or something like that? Here's a picture of the gloves I had in 10oz and 18oz:

These Conlons were more top heavy and the padding was much more dense. Not as high quality either but still good gloves all the same.

The foam is not quite as soft as Reyes in these Beaulieu gloves I have.

Thank you dude.
Yes, those gloves Bill is selling look different. I just meant Bill is selling some new gloves, not that he is selling the same. I believe those he is currently selling would be nice too.

I used to have many Conlon gloves. The "Gold" gloves were a sort of premium model. Absolutely different from the standart Conlon. Gold are Mexican style, with very soft latex foam padding and probably the softest leather I have ever touched. Lovely, really lovely gloves they were. So sorry I've sold them :(

Anyway, congratulations on your new gloves and thanks again for the excellent review!

no problemo friendo! Sorry about that confusion as well!

You make Conlon Gold sound really nice, how much did you sell them for? Take any pics before they went? Shame that brand went under because they were actually really fairly priced and good quality. I shouldve grabbed more stuff when they were on ebay, ended up with two pairs of gloves, boots and pads but they've all gone now. ToneC got a few bits of Conlon swag too

I sold them locally for appx. 40-50 pounds. But now regret very much. I took many pictures, but because my windows collapsed they all have gone. Luckily I found some on Conlon facebook.
This way looked Gold velcro:

This way Gold lace up:

And this way Red lace up:

All of them were premium line. Well, premium used to be Gold, but I would call those red premium too. All of them 16 oz. I preferred lace up over velcro (don't like much mesh).
These gloves were hands down some of the best gloves I have ever touched. The softest leather (even softer than Winning) - especially the Gold line, lovely soft padding with excellent respond. Awesome wrist support and fantastic fit. Amazing for sparring, absolutely.
Only an idiot would sell them...

so your second favourite gloves ever then after Winning? Know how much they originally sold for? Maybe the waybackwhen machine will yield the answer..

I wonder if Rick Conlon might tell me what factory made those Conlon Golds if I email him. Dont know if that information would be worth anything, hmm

He might. Why not in the end? He is a nice guy.
Well, difficult to say... there is a lot of good gloves... But probably yes, I liked them the most after Winning. Of course one can hardly compare them, but overall those Golds were lovely. I like the materials, the fit and the look too. They are very classic.
And for the price Rick let them go on ebay when selling out they were the best value for money :) Better than Winning for 200 dollars :)

Agree, Conlon gloves used to be among the best in terms of value. Good materials, nice protection and fit, good durability and not so bad price (I mean the regular, not few quid outlet). Those standart were great for bag, those Gold excellent for sparring. 2 pairs of awesome gloves for less than 1 pair of Reyes costs.
And in addition as mentioned Rick is a nice guy. I always prefer to support business run by people like Rick than by some arogant bastards even if their products are not bad.

Definitely! I'd rather buy from an individual than a faceless company as well which is partly why I bought these gloves from Bill in the first place.

I sent Rick an email

Bill wanted to clarify something that I got wrong in the review:

Although I was good friends with Dan Mosby ( Flores) we learned glove making along with all boxing gear patterns from Mr. Al Zimmer the retired (now deceased) owner of Spartan of Brooklyn. He came to our home in New Hampshire to teach us the art of selecting the right leathers and raw materials and we acquired all his patterns. We found that all the tanneries in New England were closing and it became more and more difficult to obtain good leather.we would have to travel into NYC on Sunday to buy leather. We found it less difficult to have the gear made for us, using our specs, by true tradesmen. We're just starting out with our line of gear and all is per my personal specs. Hope to have more items available soon. Now, as far as Dan Mosby. He was strictly "old school" and he and I worked together on improving his gloves. they were special and no longer available. Dan, R I P, my friend.Watch ebay for more new items coming soon.

I am very sorry Rick is out of the boxing business :( I really like his gloves. Would always buy from him...

The gloves sold by Robyn are gloves basically made by the same group of tradesmen that I'm working with, albeit my specs, rather than the exra palm padding, loking like what we call, no pun intended, the horsehoe. My specs call for the more sleek Mexican styling, but with layered foam, rather than single latex foam or in their fight glove, horse hair padding. We're just starting out, althouh,I've been selling gear with my label for years. These are new and we're excited by thir quality of material and workmanship. Our motto is "more for less" . Thanks all for your good words.Hope to see you on ebay. We may have our own website when we have perfected all the gear, not just gloves. Bill Beaulieu....billboxing

P.S. Dan Mosby learned glove making from his uncle Ray Flores, the famous referee and glove maker of "old School" hair padded gloves.Ray's father Frank worked for Sol Levinson, the San Francisco glove maker circa 1910.He made 5 oz. fight gloves for all the fighters of that era.

My wife and I learned glove making from Mr. Al Zimmer, the one time owner of Spartan Boxing Equipment, Brooklyn, NY.
Dan Made gloves for me and my label for years, prior to his passing several years ago. See our new line on ebay. Thanks. Billboxing.
