Hello fellow sherdog gear addicts. This is my first review, although I have many more on the way. I just want to say thanks to Clamp and all the other sherdoggers that are as addicted to gear as myself. It was actually the gear reviews section that made me join this forum. I've been doing martial arts for around 16 years now (mostly BJJ, Muay Thai and Judo) and I have used alot of gear over the years. But enough about me, lets talk about these great shin guards...

Now I have heard some mixed reviews about Revgear, so I was kind of hesitant to drop $65 on a set of their shin guards, especially with the amazing sounding reviews of the aries shin guards for around the same price. That being said I still decided to take the plunge. The real turn on for me was the extra foot (and toes) protection, I have broken both feet on multiple occasions, sprained and broken toes on knees and elbows, so I was simply intrigued by the foot protection on these, could it be a great thing or would it hinder my movement?

First Impressions were that this was really nice, well made, great looking gear. Strong leather smell and almost an excessive amount of padding.

Pro's: They are very well made, mine had no loose threads and after about a month of constant beatings they still look brand new, the leather is nice, thick and tight, there are no wrinkles or areas that can be pinched, an extra piece of leather is attached to reinforce the area where the the shin guard and instep guard are attached which is a nice attention to detail. The padding is dense and works great, with the added gel padding you would not feel a hit from a baseball bat through, this makes them slightly heavy, but not as heavy as KO Fightgears (which are great cheap shin guards btw). The inside liner is almost like a canvas material, it feels rough at first but when you actually wear it, it simply provides excellent grip and sweat absorption, it might be ruff on those guys who shave their legs (you know who you are) but for a person with yeti legs like myself they feel completely fine. They come pre-molded for each leg, which helps them fit pretty naturally out of the box, as I have worn them, they have conformed even more to my shins and instep and they fit like a glove. The hook an loop closers go in opposite directions which help with the snugness of the shin guards, these things do not slip or shift, even 10 rounds of sparring in. They do get hot, but not as bad as the neoprene guards. The extra padding on the back of the straps is a major plus in my opinion, they are the same design as the pads that come on the Ring2Cage Deluxe Thai pads, which I love as well, no straps rubbing you, so no irritation, which means I can wear them longer and don't have to slip them on and off. There is an added elastic strap by the ankle, this helps them fit even more snuggly. LASTLY, THE FOOT COVERAGE!!! Its awesome, it does not hinder my movement even slightly and it protects my ever so sensitive toes from the years of havoc I have wreaked on them this is what really makes this gear shine, its is the most protective shin guards I have ever used, it works wonders for occasional shot to an elbow or knee.

Cons: They are pretty bulky and slightly heavy (I think because of the gel), not as heavy as my KO Fightgears but pretty close. The weight is actually a plus to me, but some may see it as a con. When I check higher kicks I can feel the extra padding on the straps touching my ham string (this is just being picky, it does not hinder the movement though). The foot protection is noticeable when I really push off my toes, but it does not hinder my movement even slightly. The leather and dye smell is incredibly strong at first. There is no padding where the instep is attached the shinguard, its a very small are and almost impossible to hit wrong.

PROS:
+ Great Protection
+ Snug Fit with minimal to no slippage
+ Added foot protection and toe coverage
+ Nice looking and well made
+ Pads on straps prevent slippage, an allow longer periods of wear with less irritation

CONS:
- Bulky
- No padding where shinguard meets instep guard
- Strong smell initially

+/- Heavy
+/- Pads on back may make it feel bulky but you can take them off if you don't like them.

Total score would be somewhere between an 8.5 and a 9.0... definantly my favorite shin guards but none are perfect.

Any questions, feel free to ask. Some basic pictures below, I can add more if anyone wants.

They are very very comfortable... They tried some new ideas with these shin guards and both were great ideas...

Bumping this thread because I'm looking towards these for new pair of shin-guards. Two questions for you, man:

1. Are these good for MMA sparring?

2. What size did you get of these?

1. I use them when I spar standup and ground, however ground is more emphasized on ground and pound then submissions when we are wearing full gear (gloves, headgear and shin-instep guards). I would not wear these grappling, although they do not move around much, they are bulky and would get caught up in a serious grappling match. So to answer your question Yes, they are great for MMA sparring.

2. Im 6', 200lbs I ordered Larges and they fit me perfectly. The sizing is more about height and length of the shin and instep size. This is the sizing chart.

Size Shin length, inches Shin length, cm Instep, inches Instep, cm
S 12.5 32 5 12.7
M 13 33 6 15.2
L 14.5 37 7 17.7
XL 15 38 7 17.7
2XL 17 43 7 17.7

I got them off of Revgear Defender Gel Shin Guards - MMAWarehouse.com - MMA Gear, MMA Clothing, MMA Shorts, MMA Gloves, MMA Shirts and more! but I did contact revgear to ask them if there was any difference between the black ones and these Revgear Defender Gel + Foam Shin Guards. Free Shipping. Free 365 Day Returns and I was told by a representative that the only difference was the color... so if you search it and you find the red versions, they are "supposedly" the same.

Thank you for taking the time to respond to both questions (very thoroughly may I add). Actually, I've seen a couple of guys from gym have the red ones (the gym we used to be affiliated with had a deal with Revgear, I guess). Definitely leaning towards these now. Thanks again!

I recently purchased these shin guards and like them very much with one problem and was wondering if you have the same issue or have been able to resolve it.
Right where the shin guard attaches to the foot piece seems to jam right into the top of my foot. Recently when sparring I must of hit someone right at that spot and it hurt like hell :D. Even while just walking around that fold on the back digs into my foot. Do I need to wear them differently, give them time to break in, any suggestions?
Thanks for your review.

I also purchased these shinguards recently, and I'm not sure whether this is the shape of my legs, but I do not rate them so highly.

My main issue is with how the shin connects to this instep. The bottom of the shin connects with a sort of joint. As mentioned, this section has no protection and is actually quite hard. This means if you are checked in and around this section it pushed into you ankle. Also, the lack of structure a this point means the shins can be pulled up or pushed down a significant amount. This means I'm not actually sure where to wear them and with any sparring or kicking drill they will slip. I've found they do actually slip quite a bit, spinning round, despite how tight I stap them. This is contrary to what the guy in the shop had said: that the straps that go alternate ways and pads on the back prevent slipping. I am still experimenting with ways to prevents this, but I feel it's mostly caused by this joint section that is great for not restricting movement, but allows many different position. This is just my opinion and I do have pretty skinny legs, but I have found this issue extremely annoying when training. It would seem that the original poster doesn't have these issues.
