***MODS sorry, I posted this in the void that is known as the "bare-knuckle discussion" not fully realizing where movie threads were to go. A couple of us asked for it to be moved here but it's been a couple hours. If you find that thread there, just delete it please and I apologize. My bad. But this movie was awesome and I wanted to tell the sherbros***
Been watching horror all my life. I'm 28 now and I still think the 70s and 80's was the golden era of horror films. I always thought The Exorcist was the standard for religious horror/horror in general. Silence Of The Lambs is an honorable mention among others like the original Children of the Corn, The Shining, Evil Dead Trilogy etc....
Insidious was a decent newer age horror and The Conjuring set the bar to another level. It seemed like horror was entering a more subtle and nuanced approach to scares and storytelling, more set in atmosphere and tone. Creative jump scares resonating more with some of the classics but with a new age approach. I saw the first Annabelle movie in the theater and though I didn't hate it as much as the critics, I do admit it didn't offer anything Insidious or The Conjuring didn't already explore if not do better.
I went into this one with lower expectations but I came out of the theater feeling like I just saw the first horror movie in years that could make this jaded horror fan feel this way. Genuinely horrified. From the opening few scenes, to the very end, it is so unsettling and some times downright disturbing. There is one scene that I'll never forget for the rest of my life (which is how I feel about the upside down staircase crawl from The Exorcist)
The movie "Lights Out" came out recently and was based off a short film. It was a very creative and fairly strong outing from David F Sanderburg. The writer of Annabelle collaborated with David on this one and made what could be a very special entry to the horror genre, and proves that it's not dead in the least.
Go see it in a theater because the sound and atmosphere is very well handled and resonated amazingly in a large room at that volume.
7.8/10 as a movie when compared to every movie ever made.
9/10 as a member of the horror genre, even against the classics.
EDIT: Ouija 2 and Oculus are honourable mentions for new age horror too.
