So, I had no idea this existed.

Theres a Grim Dawn mod that effectively remakes Diablo 2 (Acts 1-5) using the Grim Dawn engine and some of it's class systems. Its not an exact replica, since it borrows from the systems of Grim Dawn, but its essentially a very effective remake.

Every quest. Every act. The vast majority of the item sets. Baal runs. MF runs. Classes. Why the fuck am I spending any time typing this? Rolling necro.

IT HAS A COW LEVEL

Rhykker giving it a lot of positive praise

So, the biggest change might actually be an awesome addition. Since its Grim Dawn and it uses the grim dawn character/skill system you pick 2 different classes. But you can pick 2 of any of the 5 D2 classes OR mix and match with all of the Grim Dawn classes too. So if you want to make a 2 class combo out of D2s necro and amazon, go for it. Or mix and match from Grim Dawns classes for a Necro/Solider. Or go Necro/Necro. Or Necro/Druid. Or Barbarian/Demolitionist. Theres a lot of mixing and matching you can do.

This is probably the biggest change that might turn off purists, but it sounds like theres a ton of options here. Pally buffs while raising up Hydras everywhere or shooting frost orbs while whirlwinding sounds amazing. 16 total classes to choose from and mix and matching 2 skill trees sounds like a min/maxers wet dream.

Goddamn, youd think a D2 remake would be thread worthy. Im SMH at you, Arcade.

So what the hell is this. Explain to me like I'm a retard. Honest questions, might give it a try after the hockey game tonight if its good enough.

1. I'm assuming this is PC.
2. Grim Dawn is an existing game, presumably on steam.
3. Diablo 2 remake addon to make grim dawn look like D2.
4. Why not just play Disblo 2?

It’s hard to tell from the screenshots and videos (they’re too dark or small, or my eyes just suck) but it doesn’t really look like Diablo characters running around. Is it all Grim Dawn assets just assembled to mimic Acts 1 to 5 of Diablo 2, but not actually have the Diablo characters and monsters?

i mean... maybe. but i don't feel like buying grim dawn, then buying grim dawn's DLCs, then downloading a mod...

to essentially play d2. this seems niche to those who already have grim dawn (and perhaps already grew bored of it).

Grim Dawn was an ARPG that came out awhile back by the guys that made Titan Quest. It was a good ARPG, but eclipsed by the two behemoths in the room, D3 and PoE.
It doesnt just look like D2, its the same locations, characters, quests, etc. So theres a substantial graphical overhaul. Not that GD is the best looking ARPG out there, but its much better that D2 at this point.

The Grim Dawn class mechanics make for some pretty insane combinations. Hard to explain unless youve played either GD or Titan Quest. But you basically take two classes and mash them together. Theres a shit ton of quality of life improvements that come with the Grim Dawn crafting system.

@TheWorm , its all the same characters and locations, but with new models and stuff. The D3 classes have all the same skills, just put into the Grim Dawn progression system. You still talk to Cain, do the same quests, etc. Same voice acting, etc. I mean, it IS a mod, not a new game. But playing it is a pretty nice kick of nostalgia with a helping of more modern mechanics to make an experience thats similar enough but also has enough differences to make things exciting rather than just re-rolling your old character. Im already thinking of what other class mixes to try. Like maybe a Barbarian/Duid or a Barb/Shaman. Maybe a Sorceress/Engineer. Amazon/Cultist, etc.

Damn I’ll have to look this up when I get home. Grim Dawn was actually a pretty good game, probably the best single player diablo style arpg since Diablo 2

I'm about halfway through act 2 right now and so far this mod is fantastic. It's absolutely a breath of life for the genre for me. I've been disappointed with my last 3 experiences with ARPGs, so this is really welcome.

I'm halfway through act 2 with a fire druid. I haven't locked in my second class yet because it's so hard to make up my mind lol. I'm leaning toward sorc for teleport and fire mastery, but maybe I'd be able to get better passives out of a GD class. I'm also heavily considering respeccing into a windy druid, which would probably change what my best synergies would be.

I used to have a level 70 something shaman build in GD who proc'ed lightning on melee attacks. I think this would synergize insanely well with a zeal paladin because of the attack speed. I'm probably going to start that one tonight. It would be great with barb as well, but I just like paladins better. No good reason. leap slam honestly probably makes barb preferable, but idc. I think it only procs on standard weapon attacks, though. WW hits probably don't count as standard weapon attacks, so it would have to be a frenzy barb. That makes barb less desirable and is enough justification for me to be happy going paladin.

Lol you probably don't care about any of that, but I wanted to share the theorycraft that I'm excited about. What builds are you considering?

Edit: also, let me know if you want to do some runs at some point

So I’m interested in this but it says you need all the Grim Dawn expansions?
I’ve got the base game, but to purchase the three of expansions seems pretty pricey to be honest. Guess I’ll have to wait for a decent steam sale.

They go on sale constantly. Check out CDkeys.com too. Their prices can get insane.

I was thinking barb/pally. Barb for the main class and then a pally aura like heal or thorns. But I hit the early wall because they're both hear oriented classes, so I just rolled a spec. No second class and I dunno if I'll take one. I'm always down for runs. Just haven't been able to play too much for various reasons. Just started act 2

Hear oriented?
