Herb Dean will be the third man in the cage when Alexander Volkanovski defends his featherweight crown against Yair Rodriguez in the UFC 290 main event.

Meanwhile, Mike Bell, Ron McCarthy and Sal D’Amato will score the headliner from cageside. The Nevada Athletic Commission on Monday appointed the referees and judges for the two championships fights at UFC 290, which takes place on July 8 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Dean officiated Volkanoski title defenses against Max Holloway (UFC 251), Brian Ortega (UFC 266) and Chan Sung Jung (UFC 273) before Marc Goddard oversaw the City Kickboxing standout’s last two efforts.

In the evening’s co-feature, Jason Herzog will referee the flyweight title tilt between Brandon Moreno and Alexandre Pantoja, while Ben Cartlidge, Junichiro Kamijo and Derek Cleary will serve as judges. In recent bouts, Herzog was the third man in the cage for two of Moreno’s four championship meetings with Deiveson Figueiredo.

No Cecil Peoples? We need more "Cecil People scored it 50-45 for Yair Rodriguez in the 3rd round TKO win for Volkanovski" moment

I think it's good they put Ron and Sal in the Main. I figure that'll be much less close of a fight if it hits the cards, (which it might not with good ol' Herb officiating) so it'll be harder for them to screw it up.

And Herzog will keep a tighter eye on the co-main. We just gotta keep that eye on Cleary if the fly's go the distance.

Derek Cleary and Sal D'amato are judging title fights?...get ready for some fuckery people.

This is probably a super noob question, but why do they announce the refs/judges so early?

Wouldn't it make more sense to randomize them or at least assign them night of the fight in order to prevent corruption etc?

So they can already have a write up on why they scored it 30-27 Garcia ;)

At least no Dan magooliata judging

I’ll never forgive him for the barber 30-27 decision last fight then reffing the main event and ducking that up too

fkd uo scoring and reffing in the same night - company man that is a giant red flag

Derek Cleary and Sal D'amato shouldn't be allowed to judge a coloring-in competition, let alone big name fights!

Have they ever done these types of announcements before? This is good for people on the gambling side of life. For example, I have no intention of putting any money down on the main event now that I know ahead of time that Sal D’Amato is a judge.

Some refs and judges should be tested by usada for inflated ego.

I wish I had the kind of job security Sal D'Amato has. That man has fucked up events for years and years and he's no closer to ever being fired.

Yair to drop Volk with liver shot in rd.3 with Herb stopping the fight. Then immediately the mischievous duo makes its way to the airport where Dana the ufc president wearing his flying googles is about to start the engine. Their main objective: fly the newly crowned featherweight champion, the referee and the championship belt to Mexico city.

Isn't Sal the one who is always wrong?

Pretty much.
