I have 16 oz Boon gloves I love for Muay Thai/kickboxing sparring because the hand compartment is tight and the wrist support is really good. I'm going to be going to more pure boxing sparring classes though, so wanted to get a glove that is a bit more compact for boxing, but still have a tight hand compartment and decent wrist protection. I've been floating lace ups, but I'd like to stick with velcro for ease of use.

I'm considering the Winnings, but I've heard mixed things on their velcro gloves. Also considering Rival, Cleto Reyes, Grant, 1V1, and Sabas. Its hard to gauge which one I'd like without trying them, but which ones do you think would fit the bill?

The R2C Japanese style training gloves have a pretty tight hand compartment. I use them for virtual padwork, and they're quite snug on without wraps - almost like they'd be too tight if I used them with wraps. They're also supposed to be the "best" Winning clones, but I don't know about that.
Also, you can't go wrong with Thai gloves. They tend to be created with smaller hands in mind.

I’m going to suggest genuine Mexican made gloves. You offered that you want a compact glove with a velcro closure. The profile of Mexican gloves is compact. However the hand compartments tend to be wide. They have phenomenal wrist support for velcro gloves. We are fortunate enough to have a resident expert on the various brands of Mexican gloves. Edgar Martinez @Edgar Martinez or on Instagram @theboxingcollector can suggest a brand that meets your needs. Mexican made gloves get better with use. If the hand compartment is too large for you I would suggest using more hand wraps. There are brands that will need several good bag sessions before you spar with them. Then there are those that are good right when you get them. New Sporting, Lopez and Classics are ready immediately. Gil, Casanova, Boxeo and Campeon need some breaking in. Ring To Cage is a very good suggestion if you want a Winning type glove. They’re very soft after a very short break-in period. I always ask myself would I mind being hit with a pair of gloves I’m considering for sparring. Mexican gloves have a compact profile, they’re very durable and the natural latex padding is the best shock absorber on the planet. Here’s the only problem. Latex does not gradually break down where you’ll have a gradual decline. It goes from shock absorbent to bottomed out very quickly. But reaching that point takes years of hard training in my experience unless you’re hitting tires or wall mounted bags. I try to do some after action basic care on my gloves every time I use them if possible. That keeps me on top of older gloves that may need replacement. I like to take a pair of older gloves that still have some good use in them and donate them to a fighter in our gym. You know the guy/girl. They’re the dedicated kid who rides a bicycle to the gym everyday and trains like a maniac in shitty gear. I give him or her a pair and tell him they’re loaner gloves. They feel obligated to use them and when they eventually asks me what I want for them I tell him they’re his (often it’s a her)

Out of the gloves you mentioned, 1V1 fits the bill. They are a very compact glove that offer amazing protection while still giving you great feedback and a nice "pop" on the bags. Probably my favorite training glove to use. They're made with Italian leather. As stated above, Fly is another good option with a compact hand compartment.

The adidas adispeed gloves have good soft padding for sparring and have a tight hand compartment I have the lace up but the Velcro looks like it would be decent unlike the winning that have less wrist padding on their Velcro model @TheGreenMachine

I use 16 oz lace up Boons for Boxing sparring. The only other 16 oz I've every really used is Cleto's and the Boon's feel more compact than the Cleto's to me.

The undoubtedly correct answer is fly premiums

They have a super compact hand compartment that breaks in to your hand size

Much tighter then winnings out of the box

And the new design is already compact overall too. Feels lighter then 12oz gloves because of it

Only downside is padding is on the more dense size

Sabas Bella has a very thin profile, feels kind of like a bigger pro fight glove. Better glove imo than the Fly and R2C and Adidas, and definitely is a more compact glove, but just my opinion.

Classics (Mexican brand you can get from Juan) are very compact in compartment and outward size

Dense ad in it would hurt your partner more or you'll feel it inside the glove while punching?

Yea I like my Boons and they're already pretty compact, but I've noticed they seem to be wide than the traditional boxing gloves because they're thai gloves and made for catching. That's interesting that they feel more compact than the Cletos. From the pics I've seen of Cletos, they seem to be on the smaller size of any glove.

Here we go again. More 1v1 information that just feeds my addiction.

Dense as in your partner

After they break in they won't hurt your partner but you aren't doing them any favours

Still better to get hit by then most gloves, just not as nice to get hit by as winnings or old flys

TheGreenMachine, to clarify, I've been sparring with a very old pair of 16 oz velcro cleto's that were given to me, forever. But I just started Muay Thai and ordered a bunch of Thai Gloves. I'd been meaning to get a new pair of 16 oz traditional boxing sparring gloves but sorta thought "Eh let's throw in some cheap Boon lace ups in this order and see what happens." The Boons feel longer on the arm with less wrist movement than I'd normally like a Thai Glove to be so I I don't use them much for that, but they seem just about perfect for me for standard boxing. Anyway long story short I'm comparing brand new Boon lace ups to hand me down velcro Cleto's that have probably seen better days. So, just my 2 cents on a not very fair comparison and i don't want to lead you down a wrong path. If I decided to throw down the money and buy some new Cleto lace ups it's entirely possible I'd come back to you with my tail between my legs and saying "man, was I wrong".

You really can't get more compact than Classics

Hey there,

newbie to sherdog hoping someone can answer this post.

I am wondering if anyone has experience with both the winning velcro and the winning wide velcro gloves?

There seems to be a large price jump for the wide velcro gloves. Moreover WinningJapan has the wide velcro while WinningUSA does not.

1. Is there a good reason for the price jump? (other than more material)
2. Where would be the best place to purchase winning gloves and acquire them the soonest? (I don't need to personalize them)

Thanks for reading, any help much appreciated.

Wrist support marginally better in the wide velcro version

No point in spending extra, you should just get laceup gloves and pick up a lacenloop for better wrist support than either.

I agree 100% with this as it’s the lack of wrist padding on the inside that is the issue with the winning Velcro. The price jump I think is only due to fact standard Velcro is on stock gloves but if you want double you need to pay for the custom option. Some stockist may have some “custom” double Velcro in stock but you will be paying the custom price

Late to the party but me personally the Mexican style are snuggest gloves I've had.
Mexican Classics Mexicombate there are the tightest fit you'll get.
Topboxer Alien are snug but for me the cuff/wrist isn't deep enough although it does give good support.
Gil are that nice happy middle ground!!!
I've heard your fairtex BVG9 are pretty snug too.

R2C japanese are snug but there also enormous on the hand.

Personal you'll be okay with most mentioned here we are all gear/glove perverts....I tend to stay away from the super expensive gloves just because I'm tight!!!
