I put this in the diet and supp forum becasue it kidn of has to do with it.

I began wrestling in a coillege club last year, and learned more about the horrid weightcutting that is so big in wrestling. I talked with kids, and have learned about the differetn methods that they have heard or seen, from little things such as a little dehydration, to big things such as a lot of dehydration, diretics, and losing 30 pounds in about 3 weeks. Something eslse that I have seen in wretling is that a lot of wrestlers are short, and the older coaches are fat. Is this due to the horrible weight cutting methods that they have done during thier wrestling years? The lack of eating stunting thier growth as I heard was rumored, and also causing them thier metablosim to mess up in the future.
Now there are some possilities that for my vewings since I started to wreslte in college, and not high school, and these are other possilities for the smaller shorter wrestlers i have seen:
1. Wrestling is suited for smaller, stockier guys, and thats what I see them wrestling at a college level.
2. Smaller guys fall into teh above stereotype, and taller bigger people ignore wrestling and do other sports.
3, Coaches are fat because they dont want to cut at all after thier wrestling expierence.

Im jsut curious as to why this is the reason, and I also do not want to stunt my growth at all, for I am 5"11 and only 19, and want to grow a little taller. I do eat right and everything, but when it comes next to tournament time, cutting 5 pounds of weater weight isnt out of the norm, or even more. I also dont want my metabolism to mess up.
Whew, ok, smart expierenced guys, I tried to make this into a good post, respond on.

The reason you see short guys in wrestling is a combo of your #1 & #2. Short guys can have more muscle for a set weight class. Also short guys have more trouble with other sports like basketball and football.

generally coaches are overweight because they still eat like they did when they used to train hard even though they are now inactive.

As for stunting your growth, don't worry about it as long as you eat well. Look into "The grapplers guide to sports nutrition" by John Berardi if you want a good guide

uhhh, where do you wrestle at? i mean i was a short wrestler but i was like the only short one on my team. the rest were tall. as in 5'5" to 6'2".

Short guys have the advantage when standing cause elevation change is not that much for us and taller guys cant sprawl as fast. but taller people have it better when it hits the ground. especially when they are on top. thats what i think anyway.

yeah i hear that a lot too, they have a better base on the ground. i guess i was seeing anywhere from below 5"8 to be short. maybe im being harsh, b ut i do have a lot of 5"5s and 5"6s.

your horribly misinformed.

1. shorter guys tend to be good at wrestling because it covers all weight classes from 125 to Heavyweight, below 160/171 shorter guys are well suited for they can pack a lot more muscle on thier small frame therefore making them a lot stronger and healthier

2. big people do not ignore wrestling, look at heavyweights. It is incredibly hard for a heavyweight to be below 5'10" and still put on size of a much larger framed guy at 6'0". Thats why you rarely see people who are 5'6" and fight at heavyweight. look at weight classes 171 and above most of these guys are 5'10" and above

3. coaches are fat because, they are older. as you get older you get sloppier and less active nothing to do with wrestling

as for stunting your growth its not going to happen at age 19. I know wrestlers that have stunted their growth and I tell you they are not like you Johnny-come-lately to the sport. Most guys have been wrestling since a young age before puberty. They started cutting weight at a young age. Then they start pumping weights when they hit puberty or even earlier, which is not good for kids to do at such a young age. Finally they wrestle all throughout highschool and go into college cutting weight for 8+ years on and off. This is the only way you can stunt your growth and obviously your past peuberty. In fact wrestling will probably maximize your height becasue of the testosterone released during excersize

Most coaches I know aren't fat. Of course some are, though.
Wrestling doesn't stunt your growth. Just that shorter people often are more successfull so they stand out /stick to the sport. It's the same thing as thinking basketball makes you taller.

I wrestled at 171 last year and I'm 5"9-5"10, but many of my teammates were really short.
