Any recommendations on reading material to get up to speed on the Historical, Geographilcal, Military, Political situation over there now as it looks like it's going to dominate the news for a while?

I can recommend The Litvinenko File. Russian opposition being ran from UK. Murder in London. Grey areas between governments and criminal entities. Agents using shopping trips and Champions League games as cover stories to travel here and assassinate people.

A Dirty War. Anna Politkovskaya tells of Russian crimes against their own people to justify war in Chechnya, abuse of conscripts, lack of training and equipment. Russian troops trading ammo with Chechens for food/vodka.

One Soldier's War in Chechnya, Arkady Babchenko. Personal account of similar situations. Abuse of young soldiers and pretty grim reading but very interesting for anybody interested in recent operations in the region.

the man without a face : excellent read to understand modern putins russia and how it came about

Tolstoy, Dostoevsky. And trotskys History of the Russian Revolution.
