I am fairly new to BJJ, and I have been wearing long sleeve heat gear under armour to grappling. I have already had some staph issues, but I wanted to know whether an actual grappling rash guard is any different from under armor type shirts. Are rash guards thicker or something, or are they just skin tight shirts to act as a barrier? Any help will be appreciated....

Well it all depends on the rashy, Manto makes a looser fitting rashy, or at least it's loose on me. You will be fine with the heat gear, unless you don't like how it feels or fits etc. then you should try another brand. I've heard many good things about the Rupture rashy, and I like my Manto, as do many other people.

They're all pretty much the same, but you may find better/more secure/stronger stitching on the dedicated grappling rash guards, but I've used a couple Under Armour RG's and they seem just as good as my "grappling" rg's.

I think the main difference is the name and logo on the rash guard, IMO :)

As for your staph, just ALWAYS wash off immediately after you train. Most gyms have showers...don't be shy, jump in and even if you don't use soap, at least rinse off well and then shower with soap when you get home.
You have about 20 minutes after training before your body cools down and your pours close up. You have to wash before you cool down.
If you wash off then you should never have any staph or ringworm problems.
You also MUST wash your Gi, rash guard, fight shorts, jock strap etc as soon as you get home after EVERY class.

It should be common sense, but so many people just don't do it.

in my opinion UA rash guards are a little bit thinner. But I love them more than rash guards from MMA companies. I can recommend those rash guards, they a worth its price, and very durable.

I have a couple of UA tops and really like them however I wish they were cut a bit longer as they do ride up quite a bit. Where as other tops such as sirius, manto, nogi and rupture are cut a bit longer so never ride up

yeah hayabusa rashguards arent bad either.

i also use defense soap can never be too careful

I have a 2 Under Armor rashguards as well as 1 Manto and 1 No-Gi rashguard. And the grappling rashguards are definitely thicker and seem more durable than the Under Armor ones. The Under Armor will hold up just fine for you though, I've been using mine under my gi for the last year 4 days a week and they are still in perfect condition besides the Under Armor logo cracking.

I think the cracking of the UA logo is a problem with every product of UA. Isn't it?

I've had them all over the years, mma/bjj company rash guards, under armor, bargain store brands...and none of them have even come close to being as good as whatever brand it is walmart sells. $10 each. They've held up far better than UA, which I've never had luck with. If you're one of those who insist on a namebrand, my Manto is my second favorite.

Just picked up a Nike Pro compression shirt from Sports Authority for 14.99 each.... used one under my gi the other night - felt good and seemed like it will hold up fairly well. Went back last night and grabbed a few more... on sale until saturday is what the dude told me.

I prefer the Hyabusa Rash Guards over all others. I have at least 10 different rashguards and for me the Hyabusa ones are the higest quality. The ones from Title MMA are decent but are a much lighter weight material. I have an Asics one that I really like as well.

As for the Staph infection I never had Staph but I did get Ring Worm before. Since then I use an antibacterial lotion before I grapple and then bodywipes after and then shower after training when I get home with another antibacterial soap.

I've been using the program that I bought from MMA Warehouse and it's great. I've also used the Defense soap and wipes which work great but I prefer the ones from MMA Warehouse because they smell better and I have sensitive skin so it just feels better on my skin. I'm not sure if one is more potent than the other but both have been working for me.

I have the V&M rashguards. They last forever except for the logos on the back. :D

rupture came out with v2 of their rash guards, and reduced the price of their old ones, id get 1 of each, infact i will.

my under armour is already wearing out after about a month, go with a dif brand.

MRSA was born from this guy

I have 2-3 Under Amour that I alternate through, but my favorite is my Hayabasa rash guard.

As someone mentioned the grappling specific rash guards are thicker and a little better quality.

I think this is great advice. A lot of people are going to say this is overkill, but I think you are offering up some great advice on a topic that a lot of people overlook and a topic people don't think too much about until its too late.

And again I agree, the Hayabasu rash guard, I prefer mine to any of the other options I have.

I use UA or UA clones and they work great, and last for quite a while as far as I can tell.

Also this is where stores like Ross and Marshals are your friend, they usually have them there are very reduced pricing.

I have heard from a lot of guys I train with too that they have found some cheap alternatives that do the job fine.

I have also picked up a Nike compression shirt from our(canada's equivelent to Marshal's/Ross'). I think i picked it up for $20. IT was selling for 50 at the Nike Shop.
