He got liquidated. It was kind of a public secret that he was connected to Dutch underworld figures. Same as Dick Vrij who is in jail voluntary right now because he's afraid for his life. Supposudely they were/are both on a "death-list"

still I play sometimes to an old Super NES videogame where there's Hans Nijman as a character too.

From understanding of the language, his last name would be pronounced something similar to fly, v makes an f sound in Dutch, and j is like a y. Don't quote me on this.
