I need some feedback on old school style punch mitts. Anyone use this style of glove? Which brand? Which equipment do you use them on, pads, heavy bag, d/e bag, speed bag? What are the pros and cons of using this style glove.

I tried using the search but it came back with too many results.

I've used Twins, Thaismai, Everlast and Amber brand gloves. The first two were good, it's what I've seen most Thai guys use and share. The Twins and Thaismai were both good but the leather on the Twins was more robust. What I find most impressive is how comfortable they break in. Plus if you do stations like some gyms they are very fast to take off and put on...plus they're cheap and my stinginess can not be denied.

I like them a lot personally for the heavy bag because the form and design of the glove MAKES you have better technique. If you mess up or aren't paying attention it's much more evident. Maybe I'm over thinking it but there's a more tactile aspect to the gloves, you feel the whole process more then compared to running drills on the heavy bag with 10-14's. Also I have no fantasies of my punching power, I'll never hit the bag like Frazier, Foreman or Shavers-maybe when you get to that level of punching power you need the padding but for me I think the bag glove is adequate with wraps...

Wraps are mandatory though, for me at least I need the soft gauzy Le Roy's via a layer wrap across the knuckles and then another standard 180' cotton wrap the Thai way between the fingers. Both those wraps have technical names but I don't know them...Wrist support is non existent though so if you have wrist problems, I don't thank goodness *knock on wood*, you may need the popular training glove with a solid cuff.

I've only used bag gloves on the heavy/thai bag. On the double end bag I need the larger circumference to make up for my sub par skills and everyone else uses normal training gloves for the mitts so I don't deviate.

I've never seen anyone use any type of gloves on the speed bag...that's odd now that you mention it...

I've made a design for an old school bag glove with a longer cuff with bungee cord restraints so they are still easy to take on and off. In addition it would have an inner brace made of duralin plastic that would run parallel to the radial and ulna like the scales on a fish so as not to be obtrusive for added wrist support...

I have an old pair of ringside gloves like that floating around at the gym lol and I use a pair of windy gloves like those and I personally like them more for the heavy bag for the same reason as Happnin. I'm thinking about getting a pair of shevlin like that when they are back up and running.

Not to be a professional boxer nut-hugger, however, it appears the vast majority do not use traditional mitts anymore. For example, you only see Manny Pacquiao wielding winning gloves.

I still use a pair of these old school ones with the elastic straps. I put them in the rotation every once in awhile to make sure I'm punching with proper form; you'll know when you're not. I never drop bombs while wearing these though, you're just checking form not trying to break your wrists.

I've seen Juanma Lopez use 'em. And yeah it does make your technique better it massively highlights your mistakes that you wont see with 14oz or whatever

First, I'd like to thank everyone for taking the time to reply. I wanted a little input because I started my sewing lessons Sunday and the person teaching me specializes in making boxing boots, but also knows how to make punch mitts, and the old style bag glove. He never made regular gloves in his native Columbia because he was already popular for his boots and someone else was the glove guy. He didn't want to put out an inferior product and didn't want to step on any toes.

My first project was going to be a maize bag, but my skill level is not up to par. Crooked lines and a curved surface make for an ugly bag. I'm going to start with the old school style bag glove and work my way up.

Thanks again for the input, it helps a lot. I've seen photos of old school boxers hitting the speed bag with them, that's why I mentioned it in my post. Duralin, ulna, scales on a fish, oh my.

Thanks. Good to know people are still using these. I've never used them myself because my left wrist is a little jacked up and I didn't want to risk injuring it some more. Silly me, it never occurred to me that I could use them on the double end bag, or lay off the gas and concentrate more on form when using them on a heavy bag.

It's a good observation. I've noticed this as well. It seems like after the 80's, usage for this type of glove fell off.

I'm going to try to look for more boxers using them. If you run across that JuanMa video before I do, please post it.

personally i wouldnt really recommend bag mitts anymore, because they do not really offer much in terms of protection for your hands or wrists. I remember a good few years back I was using Twins bag gloves on a heavy bag and I ended up damaging my wrist due to the lack of support. Nowadays most people will use boxing gloves for pad / bag work, because they offer more protection than bag mitts. However one thing to bear in mind when doing this is that boxing gloves use a softer foam than bag mitts, so you will get foam compression and over time the foam with become compressed and hard, which will make them unsuitable for free sparring. Nowadays most people will have a pair of boxing gloves for pad / bag work and another set for free sparring. That's my take on it.

I mostly use boxing gloves, but sometimes bag mitts for a couple of rounds to polish technique. And in the lead up to a fight to get used to the lighter gloves after training for months w/ 14/16oz.

First, I'd like to thank everyone for taking the time to reply. .

You know what,it's nice to see this, people come in here, ask a question and we do our best to answer it and they don't even acknowledge it.

I posted in another thread about recently,a quite long and comprehensive answer to the questions posed by the thread starter and I got no 'thank you' or 'cheers' or even 'fuck you, kiss my arse'.

We dig out and put in old threads where folks have already answered the questions and again,it takes time and effort and people ignore that and it gets my goat when they don't realise it,a little bit of appreciation goes a long way...

You're quite sensitive eh Tone C?

Fuck you.x :D

No,I spend time trying to help some folks out with answers,as do a lot of others on here and they can't even say a simple 'thanks'.I post in gi reviews and will say 'cheers for your time'.I haven't worn a gi in 25 years but I appreciate the time and effort the poster puts into his thread.

Now if someone wants to know something I am happy to try to help but there are some folks out there who don't even have the common courtesy to realise this and recognise it.There are threads that have come up time and again and I post older threads in them so they can check the previous answers.I could go to "SEARCH FUNCTION CUM BELT" but I don't....

C'mon folks a bit of please and thanks doesn't hurt, does it?

I would have to say I'm appreciative of all the help I've gotten by asking questions on here (even dumb questions) :D

to be honest if you are training for a fight then you would be better with a weighted glove. it will make you faster on the day. switching to a lighter glove just before your fight will have an impact on your strength and stamina. i used to use 18oz gloves right up until the fight.

Tone C just chill bro. You hardly ever get thanked for helping people out, but wait until you have some problems they will be on you like wild fire. It's unfortunately the shit that comes part and parcel in this industry.

tbh dont think it would make a noticeable difference. Pacquiao uses 12oz for his training camps I think. Depends how big you are too.

Imo people over-analyze the impact that different glove weights actually have on strength and conditioning on this forum.

I agree! I used up a better portion of an hour posting a reply about the Krav maga setup, no thank you :icon_cry2. I normally wouldn't spend that much time, but caffeine makes my mind race at a 100mph...

It's the least I could do for everyone who takes the time and effort to reply. I'm sure a majority those who didn't take the time to thank you or anyone else, appreciates your input. Even though they didn't take the time to express it.

Let him vent. He's probably on his monthly.

Awesome. Thank you!

After doing a little research, turns out a speed bag glove and a vintage style bag glove are two different types of glove.

Speed bag gloves are more like an oven mitt, with minimal padding, no gathering at the fingertips, thumb is to the side of the glove.

The Bag glove has a thicker padding, gathering at the fingertips, slight variation of thumb positioning.

I basically made a combination of the two. The glove is not complete, but here is a quick sneak peak. I have to add a few more things(piping, lining) and clean up some stitching.

Thanks for the vote of confidence! What size and what color? Just kidding.

Once I get a few samples under my belt I'll probably offer fellow G&E heads custom colors from the current stock of leather I have available, for a small donation. I would give them away for free, but thread, foam, and time cost money.
