I actually know what movie you are talking about. Hell of a cast.

It was not assassination or suicide. Mickey Rourke's character was a meth maker and a fuck up. Sometimes meth labs blow up, it happens.

This was established when The Cook unintentionally destroyed the meth lab in his motel room. No surprise he fucked up again.
