starting this thread on behalf of @diet is boring

Dude is talking about self defense more so than professional fighting, practices Muay Thai

Dude is 5' 9'' and recently dieted down from 277lbs to 211 lbs

Guys like Cormier and Vovanchyn were similar height and fought at HW with great success, but at what weight does height disadvantage become more prevalent when you fighting big guys?

@diet is boring can take it from here

Thank you man! Actually I am not even 5''9 I am 174 cm 5''8 I guess. I just practice for self defence/street fight and I fear a lot againts bigger oppenents in street fight. 6''HW guys. There is no division in street fight so I am in a big disadvantage. Is it worth to be 211 - 5'8 manlet for minimize height disadvantage(like cormier and igor I know they are very talented beast I am not like them) or should I be lean? I am lose weight very easy and don't have a problem with diet. Just for strategy.

Luckily at over 200lbs regardless of height you’re more of a hassle than it’ll be worth to attack you (assuming you’re not instigating) particularly if you’re a muscular 211lbs. Self defense is normally about someone predating on those they view as weak, and easy targets. So again as long as you’re not instigating or there isn’t currently some unmentioned pre-existing hostility between you and someone else you’re much less likely to be forced to defend yourself

that being said it’s always possible some drunk dude who looks like me 6’2” 160-180 decides to prove how tough he is to his friends and tries to fight you.

In which case I’d say fuck him up with leg kicks as best you can for a bit then go in for a clinch and dump his ass on the ground, which should then provide opportunity to escape the situation and call the police.

Weight and build makes a bigger difference than height. If you are 200lb+ with a decent build you are unlikely to be ragdolled by anyone unless they are seriously strong/huge. IMO bulking up and increasing strength/power is better than being lean for "the streets".
You are also much less likely to be picked upon in the first place.

In terms of tactics my best advice against a taller opponent is to be quick and aggresive enough to get inside their range and stop them building momentum or landing big kicks/haymakers.
In real fights a lot of people lose because they are unwilling to engage which makes them appear weak and encourages their opponent. If you cannot read the situation well or act weak when it escalates to physical violence you can get caught cold. You need to be willing and able to hit first and hit hard. A lot of fights are over very very quickly because ultimately very few people actually want to fight.

I am not sure how far I agree with you here. It depends HOW much taller, Tommy Hearns was often smaller in weight but that height, reach and leverage made him very dangerous - add in monster knee fighters like Dieselnoi and I'm not sure how far I agree

In the ring yes it matters more (or more accurately reach matters more).
Unless you are facing a very skilled (or enormous) opponent (or you are tiny) in real life weight/strength matter more as its most likely going to turn into a messy dirty boxing/wrestling type thing.
Quite a few times down the years I have spared tall guys in boxing/kickboxing who are very good at keeping the range and I struggle with speed and closing the distance but as soon as grappling/clinching is allowed (or we are playing under dirty rules) I can get close and body them due to a big weight/strength advantage.
